ERF E14 Engine Replacement

Hi,

Thank you for this resourceful site. I have learned a lot just by reading the posts in the forums as a newbie to trucks.

I recently bought an ERF E14 405 cab without an engine & gearbox. When I searched and asked around I discovered that this truck had an ■■■■■■■ NTE-405 engine and a 9speed Fuller gearbox. The gearbox is very easy to find here in South Africa, but that particular engine I just cannot get. I am getting instead either an NTC-350 ■■■■■■■ Big Cam or NTC-400 ■■■■■■■ Big Cam.

Some of the mechanics are telling me that the NTC-400 is the best match for the cab but has a reputation of spurning bearings while I feel that the NTC-350 may not be powerful enough for this cab.So I would like to humbly ask for advice here.

Thank you.

I’d be looking to put an M11 in around 420 hp ,I have a E14 nte320 and have looked for a 400 my self but not found one ,Do not buy 365 as they’re no good .

Thank you very much. I managed to find a ■■■■■■■ NTE-400-21, cpl651 ESN: 23216108.Could anyone know if this engine is BIg Cam 3 or 4? Researching about this engine, I realized that there is also an NTE-430! Could these engines be related in some way? Before I commit myself I would like to ask the experts if this could be a good engine.

Thank you.

I googled your Control Parts List number which came up with answers on other Fora to your query. Other than the advice you have had there and here, I can only really add that it would be worthwhile ringing ■■■■■■■ Technical, the number is available from any ■■■■■■■ agent, and asking if it is a Big Cam 3 or 4.

What I would say is far more important is which application the engine was removed from, even assuming it was automotive, the location of auxiliaries will vary depending on the chassis it was in. One in particular ISTR is that Seddon Atkinson and ERF mounted the starter motor on different sides of the engine. As for whether it is a good engine or not will depend far more upon its individual condition than the reputation of a particular model line. Unless you are intending to work the engine at maximum load almost full time, there is an almost equal chance of getting a bad ‘good’ engine as there is of a good ‘bad’ engine. There are various tests that can be done to obtain some idea of an engine’s health, but few can be done until you have some kind of installation.

There is quite a lot of opinion and information about the 855 cu in ■■■■■■■ on the web with information about its various failings. If you have time to read 77 pages then Bruce Mallinson’s articles on how to build a high performance ■■■■■■■ engine detail what can be done to improve an 855.

At the end of the day you are buying an old engine; it is a lottery.

Thank you very much for the advice. I totally understand what you said. I have managed to find Bruce’s articles and I am going through them.

I am very grateful.

Here is another site with a lot of information. It is subscription only for further details. There will also be a fair amount of discussion on Australian truck sites.
