ERF A, B & C series

Thanks for putting these great pics on Alan. Unfortunately money can no longer buy a top class machine like these any longer.I agree with Bowser completley if a swede had a 14 lt ■■■■■■■ in ,it may be able to compete with cheshires finest, but i dont think so some how? These ECXs are built for the long haul not the short and love to eat swedes for breakfast!!!

Here we have A (left), B (right) and C (centre) series all in one picture. The A series was owned from new by I. H. Hyde from Walsall used on general haulage out of the James Bridge Copper Works, Walsall. It was taken into S. Jones of Aldridge fleet when I. H. ceased trading, around 1974, and was a very early A series, having the air-tanks mounted on the side of the chassis, a 205 ■■■■■■■ 10-speed fuller and no power-steering. Driven from new by David Thompson (The Preacher).

The B Series was owned from new by S. Jones, driven by Micky Farrell on continental tank haulage, although in this photo it is pulling a container having finished continental work in its second life as a general haulage vehicle, driven at the time by Tony Cope.

The C Series was also owned from new, driven by Stan Brimley on continental tank haulage, and was an E290.

Very similar to the B series wagons I drove for Nestles out of Aylesford.

Bouncy, rattly, doors didn’t fit properly, no radio, no seat belts, heavy steering, and that was all of them. There wasn’t much to love about them to me…

I’ve seen that in leicester a couple of years ago, without its drag, think it went to hoyes soft drinks

Our old B series, restored by Dad (kept him out the house after retirement!)

Getting a bit more modern is Dads latest project (E10 325 Twin Splitter ex Co-op Dairies) and my Brothers E14 Swede Catcher (14 Litre 400, Twin Splitter and Eminox Stack makes the radio redundant)

And finally for now. An E10 belonging to a friend that I am fortunate enough to take out to 7 or 8 shows a year. 325 L10, Twin Splitter and must be one of the last E Series ever built. In its original livery, this is a timewarp lorry right down to the London exemption plate that Neil, it’s owner has added this year (sorry this is a 2009 photo).
Riding in an E series reminds me of Saturday mornings spent running all over in Castle Cement wagons with Dad. If anyone has any pictures of them or their Ketton Cement forerunners please put them up. I have a few which will be uploaded when I get the chance.
Keep this forum going please everyone…!

Hiya…do ya no… i had a mate who was driving a f88 in 1974 he said he,d never drive anything but a volvo. well that firm packed up and it seemed the
best job he could get was driving for Browns of stoke. guess what hes been driving since the early 80,s yes B/C/E/EC erf,s he now past retirment
and still drives them…they must be good.

Stamford Carnival, my Dad drove B708 and in later years my Brother had B706. 250 L10 at 38 tonnes, to think I moan now about a 310 Stralis at 26 tonnes (I don’t know I’m born!)

Is that “H” incognito on the right of the shot?? Dennis.

Apparently the C series 6 wheeler is the same vehicle, it was a rigid first. Dad recalls it being slighty less of a flyer as a unit!

hiya,
Dennis not me i’m afraid, have never done that show but would love too, when i get to know about interesting events theyv’e been held, what about a thread just for events that are forthcoming and posted in good time so people who wanted to go could make plans, the BRS show at the Lincoln Farm was notified in good time and living quite a distance from there gave me chance to book accommodation and get train tickets well before the event, sorry i mentioned the red and rust Dennis but i did enjoy working there and did do a hard days work and make a good job of the R&S.
thanks harry long retired.

Brilliant KETCO pics mate!. Ahh, memories of Pit Lane!. Thanks for posting them.
I thought that S&B supplied Ketton the later (B reg on) CP units with the 290 LTA10 engine, and the 250 was left to the 6 wheel rigids?. I have just chopped up the day cab from a 6 wheeler - B???BAV, I’ll check the number later!.

Not a problem, glad they bought back memories for someone else. I have got quite a few I’ve not put on here as they are earlier pics or of different makes.
I don’t know much about engines but I always did think that the CPTurbo badge in the top right hand corner of the grille indicated a 290, I didn’t want to argue with my ‘source’ though or I won’t be allowed to drive the E10 above again!

Incidentally…if you break wagons do you have the following parts? Built in Britain cab pull handles and the nearside corner bumper unit for an SP4(A) E Series?

Just realised that the Castle Cement livery will be a thing of the past soon, just as the yellow Ketco is now.

I one day hope to get hold of a suitable B or C Series and put it into the old livery but for now I will stick with being a ‘borrower’!

Just checked with Dad who remembers his wagons as 285 (B Series ■■■■■■■ 220■■?), 330 ( C38, became Castle 1123), 1204 (E10, 290), 1366 (Renault) and 1403.
My brother mostly drove 1120 and 1400. Apparently 1400 and 1403 were early EC11 340’s that would do about 60 and go past anything with a 400 badge uphill, how true this is I don’t know though.

Hiya…i think this ERF is Stevie Card,s old motor.he has a scania now. he,s only ever worked for Bassetts. I,ll try to catch up with him.
John

Hi John,

We spoke to a guy called Craig who had been a c*ach and lorry driver for Bassetts at a show a couple of years ago who reckoned it was driven by someone called Skippy, thats the only detail we have though. Have a few more pics of it in service that I will post if wanted.
It’s not our lorry but we take it out so often its like one of the family now! Its in very safe hands, belonging to the Editor of the ERF society magazine!

No, the CP stands for ‘Common Parts’ indicating a ■■■■■■■■ Fuller, Rockwell drive line. All variations and power of L10 and 14 Litre could be speced as CP’s.

I don’t break trucks, so unfortunately not. The C Series cab I stripped just before Xmas was from B703BAV. The badges in the handles (if that’s all you need) are seperate items and do come on eBay at times. I do know where you can perhaps get the SP4A corner bumper though. PM me.

Castle still have an E Series shunter in the works. I saw it just before Christmas through the Pit Lane gate to the works.

Well any chance I get to show Gertie off, she sailed through the MOT last September. The boys in the yard keep popping
in and asking if they can shunt trailers with her. This was taken at our Preston Red Scar yard by J31A of the M6. regards Big Al

Hi Big Al,

Great pic, looks as though Stobarts might have tanker competition?

Take it easy,

Rgds,

David

Hi ERF,

Thanks for the reply, I’m using my phone to send this but will drop you a pm when I’m back near the PC. Its the entire pull handle we are after as the last owners had snapped it off. When we bought it the tilt ram had seized so I guess someone tried to exert a little too much pressure on it!

Thanks for the info on CP. I don’t pay much attentions to gearboxes beginning with F, give me a Twin split any day!
