As far as can remeber The Seddon atkinson was driven by Ivor Pizzey, Reg started off at Derek’s with a Six wheeled, Bootsy Mauson drove the six wheeled Albion, Leyland Retriever, which was Jerry Evans’s, Jerry then moved onto the F86, Archie had the first of Hicks ERF’s A series with a 240 ■■■■■■■■ Ivor pizzey Then Joined and Drove the other F86, Due to Jerry doing most of the long distants he Moved up to there only F88. i know that Derek is still around. did you live local at that time.

Question------ about a prior ERF model than A,B or C models. Can anyone re-call ERF building 4x2 tractors in the early 60s and fitting them with Perkins engines?I know they used the Perkins engine in their lightweight rigid 4 wheelers but not in their tractor units.Bewick.

According to Peter Davies’ excellent book on ERF’s they did offer a tractor unit model no 64SP for 17 tons gross weight powered by the Perkins 6.354 engine

REA from fazeley near tamworth ran a b and c series erf,s in a similar livery to this one their colours were claret and blue in the same way as on this a series

Yes this was the lorry owned by Derek H Hicks. i Have the original glass from the headboard in the barn with Derek’s name on it. would that be Reg Long, my grandad Jerry Evans Drove for Derek H Hicks for many years.

Yeah that’s a blast from the past I remember all of them, plus Billy Mawson a good mate for the best part of 50 years, there was another guy Merv can’t remember his last name, lived in Ciren. Not to sure about Jerry Evans the old memory plays up at times :unamused: I did know a Jerry Evans very well for years, but I can’t remember him on for Hicks, the Jerry I knew was on for C. J. Howes from Aldsworth don’t know if that’s the same one.

Thanks for that Tim,why I was asking was I had shot of an ERF unit sent to me which was one that belonged to an old pal, Harry Fearon, from Mealsgate in ■■■■■■■ it was a 1960s B reg. but I’m sure Harry would have run it at a much higher gross weight than the 17tons you indicate. It was pictured coupled to a 30/33ft tandem trailer.Cheers Bewick.

Hiya Dennis…yes one at least. it was ordered by JW Barrow at Northwich for a training waggon…I made a fancy bonnet top(round type)
that the instructor could sit in comfort(hummmm) and not be perched on top with the chrome handle. The 354 perkins sat low down so
the instructor sat at the same height as the passenger.the seat was sort of half round cut out so the instructor sat facing the passanger
door pillar. He must have had a stiff neck at the end of a shift trying to look forward. so the answer is YES.you could also have a V8 perk
if you was that desperate.
cheers John

Thanks for that John. The shot of the one belonging to Harry Fearon is a ■■■■■■■■■■ 64’ B reg which he would have bought new,I can’t get my head round why Harry would have run such a lightweight tractor as a lot of his traffic out of West ■■■■■■■■■■ (before it was ■■■■■■■■■■■ heavy loads of Steel ect.so as the GVW of this era was 24ton he would have been putting 15/16 ton on a 33ft tandem.this would surely have made the 6.354 Perkins gasp a bit you would think.Anyway one the Marra’s might see this post and shed some light on the matter.Cheers Dennis.

Barrow must have been setting up for the (new ) hgv driver testing . witch came in IICR jan 71.I know i just missed out on the grandfather rights thing.
