Hiya Dai bach,I’ve heard that tale years ago about the Volvo badges and Entress, but it sounded a bit futile to me as the motors were quite clearly F86’s,but obviously old Entress was “■■■■■■ off” so he voted with his feet ! Cheers Dennis.

hi dennis I drove for entress for 10years he was good boss did not see much of him. john hayes transport manager very rare to run m/t he new how to keep us loaded .in the summer ran Weymouth to brum market. bill entrees being Swedish had the fleet sprayed the
colour of Swedish flag ref to badges they came wrapped up under passenger seat i screwed mine to the inside of the cab. when I worked for him he had about 45 trucks based all over me being in Hereford

Hi Stan,
Did you work with Paul Christie, Brian Barnett, John Lewis or Dai Kinsey, all lived around the Kington area and drove for Entress when they ran Volvo F86.
Cheers Dave.

As a sixteen year old I worked in the rates office of Beresford Transport, Tunstall, Stoke on Trent (about 1964/1965) and I can clearly remember a Scania Vabis on loan or trial from Entress. I sat in the cab and it was luxurious compared to the Fodens, ERFs, Albions and Dodges that comprised the Beresford fleet at that time.
Beresfords were part of the Road Haulage Association (RHA) and I guess Entress was too, hence the loan of the Scania Vabis. It mustn’t have appealed as Beresford continued with ERFs and Fodens for many years.

Yes,I remember Entress Transport H.They were at Llansamlet on the way into Morriston.I used to fill up there in the 70s and they were running F86s then, but I do recall them using Leyland Octopuses in the earlier days.Used to see 'em in the Sheffield area with bales of scrap on.I think there’s some pictures on the forum somewhere.
Griff Fender were a removal company weren’t they?

Hi Chris, yeah Entress were on Peniel Green road, alas it is now waste ground. I remember going with my grandad in the F86’s,that was the slippery slope to my entering the trucking industry   . Griff Fender were a removal company based in Pentrechwyth, about a mile from Swansea city centre. Nice to know someone remembers the old companies.Thanks.

Entress ? Yes I remember them like it was yesterday. You would see them all over the country at one time. Light blue in colour with Entress in big yellow letters on the front and side. Didn’t really know anything about them but was used to seeing them about as at the time they ran a large fleet of Volvo F 86’s.
I do remember seeing one of them in an unfortunate predicament at one time on the A 13 Barking near Containerways yard. Must have been 1966 or so and he had about six or seven 20’ flats stacked on top of each other. He must have braked hard as the top one had slid off over the top of the cab and was lying in the road. One of those cases of rather him than me, although it appeared not to have done any damage.

W.G.Davies were in that area as well H,in Morriston or was it Llandore? I used to fill up there as well. They ran a lot of Crusaders and always looked immaculate. Another one I remember was George Beer,he was from Swansea wasn’t he?And then there was Prosser or was it Rosser from (my Welsh is not rayt clever  ) Pontilw, they ran some real old tackle including AEC MK3s 8-leggers and chinese sixs, usually with a big rough coil on the back plodding along the A48.

Aye,TIR a bit embarrassing when that sort of thing happens, especially on the A13 near Barking, plenty of witnesses I’d imagine.

TIR,thanks for that it really made me smile. How I long for those old days,as a child totally in awe of all the drivers. It doesn’t seem to have that feel nowadays.

Hey Chris,W.G Davies(Landore)but based in Morriston I remember the Crusaders(just),but mainly the Marathons, they’re an ERF/MAN service agent now :frowning: Georgie Beer finished around 12years ago, they were just around the corner from WG’s,his motors always looked knackered :open_mouth: And finally the icing on the cake.old Tommy Rosser of Pontlliw  what I would have give to have bought one of those MK3 AEC’s,alas it wasn’t meant to be. I was about 12/13 when they called it a day :frowning: Pulling steel out of Bryngwyn,Trostre and Felindre(now just a piece of derelict land) took their toll. Thank you for making my weekend.Diolch(thanks in Welsh).

Well H. we are going off the Entress thread slightly here but here’s a few more out of the memory bank.
Trevor G.Philips,Cadoxton.
Gwynne Bowen,Gorseinon.
Ivor? Caswell.
S.Protheroe.
Williams Bros.,Crosshands.
Somebody from Fforestfach - can’t remember the name.
Coastal Roadways, tankers from Pyle (I think).
Valley Carriers,Penarth.
Blue Line Transport,Tondu-used to work for British Tissues I think and eventually went in with Cardiff Transport to make it Carline Transport.Had a depot in Sheffield.
John Raymond,Bridgend of course.
I was on tanker work in the 70s and Port Talbot Chemicals,BP Baglan Bay and BP at Llandarcy were regular calls for me.
Can’t think of any more at the moment.
Owd Rosser kept going for a bit then before “pulling t’pin?”
Are any of these still running do you know?

Hi fellers. New name on the forum, but I’ve been around long enough to remember all the names mentioned. An old friend of mine was a director of Entress Transport, along with Bill Entress, up to the sale to TDG. He still draws his private diesel form TDG depots arouind the country!
Anyone remember another Cardiff based company called Hutchinsons Transport? Or Clarks, from down the docks? Hughes Transport? Hills Transport? And what was the company that ran out of Penarth Road with a fleet of four-in-line trailers? All of these were in the 60s & 70s.

By the way, while we are in that part of the UK can anyone enlighten me on this ? Years ago I used to quite regularly use a cafe on the old A 48 called Taylors’ Cafe. This was back in the early 60’s and I am sure at one time this was Taylors Transport who also ran a cafe. Someone out there please tell me I am not going senile and this is a fact.

there was a Taylor’s cafe at Langstone, just east of Newport on the A48, but I don’t know if it was connected to Taylors Transport. I think it’s still a cafe, though.

Eyup Emmerson.I remember Hutchinsons,Hills and Ely Transport on the A48 going out of Cardiff.
Two more I recall from the Swansea area were Philip Jones from Fforestfach(sp) and Iltydd Thomas.Did I spell Illtydd rayt?
So Entress sold out to TDG did they? And the yard is no more I understand;it’s a shame these old firms couldn’t keep going.

TIR. I remember a cafe in that area, you could see it on the left on the old A48 as Emmerson says.I used it once or twice so no,you are not going senile pal! Don’t know whether it was called Taylors - it was nearly 40 years ago.

Rosser certainly had their moneysworth out ot those AECs Merlin.I’ll bet they never had a new motor all the years they were running. The firm I worked for in the 60s/70s were still running AEC MK3s up to about 1973 and MK5s around 1976.
I remember Ely Transport running AECs,used to pass their depot regular on the old A48.
Was Glyn John from Taffs Well or have I got it wrong as usual?

You werent far wrong Chris, Glyn John had white Seddon Atks and were based at Pontypridd, at Taffs Well are Rhys Davis who are still going strong.
Ely were bough by Glyn John, and then moved out of Ely to the Docks. They wrere then bought by Scuddens BH Transport who also bought febrys and Prices. On my Dads 63rd birthday they went into recievership and he was finished…best thing that ever happened to him…hes still going well at 80!
