Thought you were but just been told it’s a no go for an assessment at Wincanton Ross-on-Wye until I get my licence back from the DVLA — 2 to 3 weeks !.
Do we know anything about working for them out of Ross ? Done a few runs, class 2, out of Portbury and the lads are great apart from a numpty or two in the office. Work was ok, relaxed and easy going.
Agency mentioned some “points rules” for tacho infringements and not wearing hi-viz etc, is this typical of a large haulier, petty about breaks et all ?
Rate is circa 8.50 with a little extra for antisocial so not so clever, but…
Well, my examiner said “It’s as good as a license”, although I was asking about carrying on using my C license whilst waiting for my C+E to arrive. The DVLA website is a little vague on this.
However…
As for the 2-3 weeks, that’s what they say officially in case they’re being a bit slow, but it typically takes about a week +/- a few days IME.
Hi, i sent my licence off a week ago but phoned DVLA before hand and they informed me that it is ok to drive as the police and VOSA can check straight away if your entitled to drive. She did recommend photocopying before sending though hope this helps.
I was driving the very next day after passing my C+E (and C for that matter). Sounds like Wincantons not giving very much trust to you. You have a document to say that you have taken and passed a driving test, so I personally don’t see a problem.
A Pass Certificate is an authorisation to drive the class of vehicle to which it refers.
The DSA recommend that you have your Licence updated within two years of the Test, which, I presume, mirrors their destruction policy on test records under the Data Protection Act.
When I passed my PSV I drove on service straight after the test, but I was driving for the same company as the examiner worked for.
Whilst on my HGV I only got to drive a rigid on the same day (Tuesday) & then had something booked for the Wedensday so it was the Thursday before I got to use it on Class One.
The back of my Test Pass Certificate (no, I haven’t thrown it away yet - I wonder why… ) says:
Your test pass certificate is not a license to drive; you MUST exchange it for a license showing your full entitlement within 2 years of passing your test. If you do not do this then you will lose your entitlement to drive the category covered by this certificate.
The pass certificate is just that shows that you have passed, it does not entitle you to drive until DVLA has updated and you have your licence in your hand.

It took DVLA 2 days to update my license.
Not true!!!
Once you have been given your pass cetificate you are able to drive that class of vehicle! however you must update your licence within 2 years of recieving the certificate otherwise you will lose that entitlement.
there is lots of old wifes tales going on about this, but you may, and I have known many that have, gain employment and drive LGV’s on production of a pass certificate regarless of what it states on your licence, in fact it is quite common for agencies to employ drivers who have only passed their test the same day to be working the next day driving LGV’s on production of a pass certificate.
I thought it went something like this! "providing the driver is entitled to or has held a licence and is not disqualified from holding such a licence etc
A Pass Certificate is an authorisation to drive the class of vehicle to which it refers.
What you cannot do with a Pass Certificate is accompany another learner, or in the case of Class B (cars) tow a trailer, etc. Although the former restriction is now largely irrelevant following the introduction of rules relating to the minimum period after passing a test.
I am NOT allowed to drive Wincantons (Somerfield’s) trucks until my license is presented to the office… Probably more an insurance issue than anything else, but it was THEM that put me thru my test and I HAVE the pass cert, etc…
It’s been 1 week now (passed 22/11) and i’m checking the post box about 400 times a day… One of the guys got his back in 4 days…
I will point out the official blurb to them tonight tho, when I go in…

Quite true - the pass certificate is not a licence to drive. It doesn’t need to be, as you must have a provisional licence (or a full licence with provisional entitlement for that group) anyway.
You may drive (without L plates, unsupervised) on the authority of a provisional licence with a pass certificate.
Thanks for all the input on this folks, seems we have a unanimous decision as always…
My license has still yet to arrive so have had to knock back two class 1 jobs to date. Such a shame as I would have liked to have driven class 1 before my 52nd, hopefully I’ll make it before my 53rd.
