english macks

Bowser if you pm me your email address I will try and send you a copy so you can print it off. I dont have the original, I borrowed them off my ex boss Kenny Harvey ( Farnworth) but I do have them saved to disc.

Paul

oooh bonzo bear

i used to do a bit for chris at the time he bought it, it was a punishment to drive

dieseldog6:
Paul, I saw that picture before does anyone know anything about the driver or the truck, seems to be well tarted up, someone must know?

i could tell you about the driver i could even tell you his name ,

Bowser, I am thinking his name is Jason?
please tell us about him and the sort of work he was doing at the time.

Before Ken Harvey started as the company he has now he used to do the M/E for a company called R.F.Interport from Leigh, If you search through the old forums in the photo section around June 07 I posted a pic of his old Daf loaded for Tehran together with the pic of your stepdad and the Mack. I drove for Kenny on the international side in the early 90’s until about 98, as did another driver on here Dafdave and I have to say they were the BEST days of my driving career. I only left after my son was born and I decided that I wanted to be home more. He has still got drivers with him that have been there for prob 20 years or more, some people regard him as a hard boss but I never had a problem and would go back tomorrow and still regard him as a friend rather than an ex boss.

Paul

No sorry bowser only got the one pic

I got the PM regarding the email add so havent sent any to that add as yet send me an email when you have an updated email add and I will email the pic to you

Does anyone remember the 6 wheel Mack that “Chris Miller” of Preston used to own ?

Story has it that it had some sort of special rear axles for the heavy haulage job but don,t know what the axle design was though!

Original bogie swapped in December 1980 for dump truck type rear bogie.
This added 0.4m to the rear track, but eliminated half shaft failures

Hi everyone.
Iv’e looked at these “English macks” pages many times and having been an enthusiast of the make for many years I am allways looking out for info on them on here.
I very much regret that they have left the scene here in the U.K,and that the cab over ultraliner was discontinued in the nineties, what a great truck that was, I remember giving Paul Maggs’ truck a thorough looking over and interogating its driver at the truckstop in west brom when he first bought it new, and then driving my boss at the time up the wall nagging him for one, but I thing they must have been a bit pricey comared to the usual stuff because I never got one anyway.
Sadly I can’t say Iv’e ever worked on one but have had a drive of a couple and mightily impresed I was.
On my most recent visit to Canada I went to a truck show and made a straight line for the Mack stand, but to my suprise and dissapointment I found that in the last few years Mack seem to have changed their principles of building trucks as they are not what they used to be, tacky plastic and technology everywhere, and they don’t seem to be as robust as I remember them in the past, sign of the times maybe or the kiss of death from volvo, they have allways in the past had an image of being tough as nails last for ever truck, I wouldn’t say that about the new ones, the drivers and opperators I spoke to there were pretty negative about them too, what a shame

Any one remember the Macks run by Harold Williams of Moreton Valance on livestock work, moving cattle. One of the drivers was a bloke called Terry Wells, who I think lived in Taunton at the time.

Perhaps someone could refresh my memory? Wasn’t there a plan afoot, to import Macks into the UK? They used to make a funny looking flat fronted six wheeler, used as a dustcart in the states.

I thought that there was a plan to import Macks here in the early 80’s can anyone remember this

Mack did used to import their vehicles through a company in Bolton.

there were a number of motors sold, including some of the type you describe - Ruttles had some as 6x4 tippers and one which had a slide-back plant body.

Hi I think I operated one of the first Mack’s in the UK !!
Tip Rome reload Latina every week !

It was classed as a “Locomotive” in heavy haulage terms so I am led to believe!

I think Chris Miller’s Mack was called Bonzo Bear, it was used in the construction of the power station built inside a mountain in Wales, I
will try and dig out a picture of it. There was a company in Wigan in the early 60’s used to do Wigan to Glasgow and back in the night (no mean feat then)
I think they were called P&H (? might be wrong) They had Mack lorries with
“King of The Road” written across the bumper in large letters.

Ruttles had about 6 6 wheel low loader units, there is a picture on my website on the home page of a very dear departed friend of mine called Brian Gale who is sat reading his paper in the cab of Ruttles Mack. Ruttles changed from Mack’s to Fodens and the 5 or 6 Mack Units were parked at Twin Lakes Croston for a long time. I don’t know what happened to them after that. I remember the 6 wheeler tippers, they were using them on a pipeline job round Preston in the early 80’s. regards Big Al

Hi Ian Burns, I saw your question on here some time ago but have not been able to log on( someone must have a similar name or e-mail address to me) Paul Mack now belongs to Michael Janes in Weston-super-Mare (www.Michael Janes Commercials.com). After I semi-retired last year I did some work for him someone had started to convert it into a wrecker before he bought it I converted it back to a unit and got it ready for MOT. We drove it round on ‘trade plates’ for a bit, Michael was going to paint it and use it on ‘sunny days’ but in the present financial climate work dried up and I moved elsewhere, as far as I know it is still in his yard.
Some other posts on here have said that the Mack importers were in Bolton, in fact they are Western Trucks from Leyland Lancs. This Mack was the only 100% type approved one imported. They now supply Mack parts all over the world and can also supply parts parts for any other American truck, they used to supply parts for my Kenworth and I collected parts for the Mack last summer when passing. Hope this answers some other questions.
