Just brought a 2004 Scania V8 580. Been looking through the drivers books, service books etc but can’t find out what engine oil to use. Yes the books tell me its 15w40, BUT, Does the engine take Mineral, Semi or Fully Synthetic oil? Any help gratefully received.
I would contact miller oils at Aberdeen as you will get free testing as well
The technical data in the handbook should give you a code number for the oil.
Look the code up on Morris oils wbesite, and that will tell you what to use.
Alternatively ring your local scania dealer. They’ll tell you.
I’d put Scania V8 engine oil in that motor mate…
It’s available from the Scania V8 engine oil shop.
Oh look, it’s time to go
Sorry, I wish I could help.

Can you ring the dealer who put the last stamp in the service book, He will be able to pull the invoice up or tell you they only use one type or similar. It is not worth risking mixing the two for the cost of a phone call

DD doesn’t drink. I can only assume some one spiked his tea with coffee!
as williemac said millers oils they have or at least had a depot / agent down at the harbour in buckie niko
If its a 15/40w its almost certainly a mineral oil,a synthetic would be a 10/40 or 5/40.

Hi Niko, I was only pullin’ yer leg mate…, and I’m still sorry that I couldn’t help.
it really depends on what it has been servviced with, the best way would be to find the last place that did the oil change and ask them what oil they used,
When i worked at Scania we put 15/40 in everything then i beleive it changed to 10/40,
Failing that, do an oil change and fill it with whatever you like then.
Isn’t synthetic oil better to use than mineral oil full stop?

Better? certainly more expensive and lasts longer. But it doesn’t mix, maybe that is the reason for asking,
When i worked on them we put 10/40 semi synthetic oil in all of the scania’s, 420’s 470’s 480’s and 580’s.
I was told that you can mix mineral oil and synthetic oil and that that’s exactly what semi-synthetic oil is.
Niko,
Just checked the data from Shell for you at it is suggesting:
Rimula R6 LM 10w/40
Rimula R6 LME 5w/30
Both of which are fully synthetic oils. However, like everyone else has said, mixing isn’t advisable.

I was under that impression as well.
It probably doesn’t matter that much as long as the oil in the engine isn’t “old & tired”. As long as you change it regular, you shouldn’t have a problem with what oil you put in it.
