elf "n" safety

the load rail panels on a flat bed 40ft just over the height of my globetrotter xl cab, now I had to chain these buggers on, just about to climb on to get my chains over, OI comes the shout you cant do that you need a safety harness, ok so I throw a rope over to be clever and tie to the chain and pull it over, but the chain snags need to get up and sort it, no ladder about and still wont let me climb up, this is what they do one of their loaders nice coloured chap as it happens, in a harness hooked up to the mobile crane and sent him up, so done that pulled out whats the first thing I do park up the street a few hundre yards climb up to check there ain’t no loose stuff, that can drop off after all safety of the load comes down to me. they drive me nuts

I am afraid it is happening everywhere, on the tanks, you either have to trust someone to close your lids properly or do as you say and park on the road outside to secure them properly. Always handy to have a spare coloured chap around though, some come with ready bandaged heads :stuck_out_tongue:

I like that Wheel Nut

I’m beginning to find alot of sites (especially in London) won’t let me stand on thr bed of my truck which is like 2ft off the ground without guard rails harness etc, but I’m allowed to climb 10ft up to my crane to operate it :unamused:

Pain in the zb when the loads netted, now I get one of their ‘trained operatives’ to climb up and unnet it for me if they gonna be like that

One site I went to they were craneing the bags of sand I had on straight off the lorry as I wasn’t allowed to use my crane, guy on the bed had a harness attached to an overhead gantry, but the line was so slack he wouldve hit the ground anyway had he fallen off :unamused:

Another site I went to with a load of granite slabs in crates wouldn’t let me use the crane either, not even to lift it out the way so they could take the crate off that the grab was clamped to. When I pointed that out they said I would have to take that one back :open_mouth: Called my boss, he wasn’t happy as they had specified crane offload so he makes a few calls, next thing I know mister elf and safety comes over and starts Reading me the H+S riot act, upset that I had ratted on him. Fine whatever wake me up when your done. Ten minutes later he comes back looking very sheepish and apologises because he’s spoke with his boss and it turns out I am allowed to use the crane :unamused:

Them who can , DO
Them who can’t, TEACH
them who haven’t a clue do the health & safety.

i hate to say it, but i’ve actually got a diploma in health and safety.
and one thing that i remember is. you would breach health and safety guidelines by shouting “oi”.
why?
because, if you find the need to instruct someone not to do something, as it could endanger them or others, then they are probably in a potential, dangerous position, and shouting “oi” , could endanger them further. this is because it could startle them.

this happened to me with a prat of a forklift driver. i was climing on the trailer. he raced up behind me, then sounded his horn. i thought the [zb] was going to run me over, so i fell, and hurt my knee.
he proceded to shout " you can’t climb up there drive".

“not any [zb]in more i can’t, you stupid [zb] head”. then i hit him, once or twice.

then i got arrested.
and who the [zb] invented “beans on crumpets?”. it’s beans on toast. still, there wasn’t any powdered egg.

and invent stupid tackle like the air bag system.

My idea is much simpler and uses Coffeeholics natural selection process :stuck_out_tongue:

have one of these hung over the trailer, that will teach people to be more careful

I had to deliver a load of safety cushions once, the type they clip together to break a fall from about 4ft. They were stacked about 12’ high on a flat body and to get them off I had to climb up the bulkhead and stand on top of something resembling a bouncy castle and lob them to the ground. As usual Health & Safety can be turned on or off according to the site management to suit their needs.

Duplicated post

I was on a site recently and watched a similar episode unfold.
Driver on the rear of trailer slinging his load of concrete flooring beams for the tower crane. Airbags inflated all the way around in case he ‘fell’

He finishes the load and the airbag firm deflate and fold up the airbags, they stow them into a 7½ tonner and sod off. Driver gets notes signed by site agent, Site agent wont let driver depart untill he has swept the trailer bed off.

He finds a broom and throws it on the trailer, and starts to climb up… you have guessed it, he cannot get up on the motor untill the airbag firm are called back!

And they wonder why Englands goin down the pan, And there adding grease to it all the time, soon you’ll need a risk assesment for risk assesment in case of repetetive strain injuries for holding a pen :unamused: :grimacing:  :open_mouth:
