In order to save a trip to the post office to renew my tax disc I decided to do it online. My insurance expires on 31 March and that was renewed on 14 March. All goes well, the MOT that was done on the same day is ok but when we get to the insurance we grind to a halt. According to DVLA the insurance does not cover the date of the new tax disc although I have a Certificate of Insurance that starts on 31 March.
I find that strange. When I last renewed mine on line the insurance expired at the same time. I had also changed my insurer. The whole thing went through without a hitch.
So long as the car is insured on the date of renewal it should be OK - It doesn’t matter when it expires.
I can only assume that your present insurer has messed up somewhere and you haven’t been on the database all year…
It was recorded by my present insurer but presumably not by my new one, as yet. The other point is that if you got stopped and it was not recorded and you had no documents with you, you could have your vehicle confiscated until they were satisfied that it was insured.

not normally.
i got pulled because my car wasnt showing as being insured. luckily i had the details with me. the police will normally call your insurer to confirm that you are insured before calling the tow truck

Knowing my luck I would, the insurance expires on a Friday night.
You don’t normally show up on the database until the policy comes into effect. It’s to stop people buying insurance, taxing the car then cancelling policy in the 14 day cool off. You will be fine taxing it as soon as your new policy comes into play

As you changed insurers the new company will not update the online database until the start date of the new policy, I had this problem with my previous car when the insurance and tax had to be renewed at the same time. It was ok if I continued with the same company as they updated as soon as I renewed, but when I changed I had to take it to the Post Office and show the cover note…
With my new car the renewals are 6 months apart, so no problems now
I’ve had the same experience as waddy640. My motorhome is due for retaxing as of April 1st, I do not need MOT until 2014, my insurance is already there and paid up , but when I tried to tax online yesterday and again this morning it came up with the same response as he got. It made me wonder whether RFL fees are going up and this is to prevent us getting it at the old price.

I changed insurers last year and no problem. I suppose there is a price to pay for wanting to save £60 on the premium.
If I change insurer,[which happens every year] I renew one day earlier than
the expiry date.
Then I know there’s a safety overlap, and it costs virtually nothing.

Except you will be quoting the wrong no claims bonus

I don’t see how one day would make a difference, unless i’m not understanding you…

I’ll take it to the post office then.
Good lad, keep the post offices open
it’s a shame the post office get only 70 pence from the sale of a tax disc, hardly a mega income.

Not on its own, but it all adds up, and we need the local places. Our post office almost survives on Ebayers, until they start to use Paypal Post! where they are making it very difficult to post stuff. I hate the Royal Mail but as a village centre post office I feel they do serve a need
