Electronic Overhead Information signs

Hello good people, I was driving back up the A14 from Ipswich back to Cambridge and the overhead signs were all reading ‘A1 S/bound closed after St Neots A428’. Not good thinks I, as next ttrip is Newport Pagnell. Heaves a big sigh and goes via A505, Royston/Baldock, and N/bound A1, then cut off the corner along the A603 to get onto the A421. After Newport Pagnell I re-traced my route but went all the way back to the Black Cat and then N/bound A1 as I had to go to Huntingdon next. Glances over to the other carriageway, and it’s open (!)
What gets me is this: They spend God knows how many millions on this fancy signage, not to mention the delays/diversions/ and general inconvieniance that gets suffered mostly by the night time users of these roads. at untold extra costs to the hauliers. And then they can’t even be bothered to keep the ■■■■ signs updated. Whatever is it all about?? These tossers would have to work hard just to be ordinarily useless. Just think of the extra time, the extra fuel, and wear and tear on drivers as well as trucks.
Why can’t these people just do the right thing by roadusers and keep the signs updated?
Comments please…

Paging highwayman and real biffo, this has been done a few times lately.

They seem to be there to state the obvious, I was on the M4 in wales before xmas on a wet day & the signs were warning me to slow down because of ‘SPRAY’
‘Bloody Hell’ I thought where’s all this SPRAY coming from !!! then I looked in my mirrors & it was coming off my tyres ! :unamused:
I like the Don’t Drink & Drive sign’s (always makes me put my Bottle of Vodka in the cool box) I think the Matrix Monkeys must be bored co’s they hav’nt got much to report. :open_mouth:
The new Managed motorway signs are the Best, they put a speed limit on the overhead gantry then Flash you when you go over it, they will soon be having us all doing 40 mph every where. :frowning:
I wonder how much all these signs are costing us ?

i once saw a notice saying A1 closed at Team Valley, the thing was, i was at Newmarket heading to Ipswich.

It makes me laugh when they say “M6 CLOSED J14” at Penrith!

it was indeed shut yesterday though! exactly where you say due to firefighters cutting someone out a vectra :frowning:

The trouble is as drivers (and not just trucks) we have lost faith in the ability of the signs to provide reliable information after being deceived so many times.

Consequently the other day on the A1M Huntingdon when it was flashing 40mph not one vehicle altered its speed, your typical flow of 50/56/70/80+mph drivers carried on without even a blink of a brake light, and we were talking busy busy traffic. Sure enough we were all right, not a ■■■■ thing wrong, trouble is what happens when WE are wrong ? It will happen big style one day for sure.

Rod for back springs to mind, they need to take the bull by the horns and get their act together urgently.

Can we have a matrix that says “Use lane 1 except when overtaking”?

And why do we need one that says “Poor driving conditions”? Isn’t the lack of visibility a big clue?

saw a cracking one the other day “Please clear you window screen” really drivers need to be told this?

In a word, Yes!

Most car drivers need to be told when to wipe their arses these days.

I often see one when its raining
SPRAY SLOW DOWN
anyone else seen it

I know, the best bit is I’ve never seen the spray moving quickly!

Yes, often when it’s not raining!

SALT SPREADING when the temperature outside is 5 degrees plus still, and not a gritter in sight on a night like this…

They could actually save some money if they only gritted the road when the temperature dropped below 2 degrees, rather than relying on the forecast which usually gets it completely wrong.

There was supposed to be a 2-3cm snowfall here in Kent tonight. Can’t even see any dandruff style snowfall out there, let alone it laying!
