Electronic height display/indicator

Evening all. Just come across this on Facebook so I thought I would share and get you opinions. I know some of you don’t have Facebook so I’ve copied the gumph and posted it below with pictures.

Heres a good idea:

Latest Innovation in Bridge Strike Prevention from leading safety solution provider Westcotec Ltd

Bridge strikes are a common occurrence and one that can be easily avoided if drivers knew their exact height on a daily basis.

Commissioned by one of the UK’s leading courier firms, Westcotec have designed, manufactured and installed the first HGV real-time measuring device of its kind coupled with an electronic sign displaying in the specified feet and inches.

When a driver stops at an exit gate to input the release code, the trailer height is measured above from an overhead gantry. This height measurement is sent instantaneously to an LED sign in front of the vehicle which provides the trailer height to the driver. Equipped with this information, drivers are able to take the necessary action to avoid incidents involving height restrictions.

Its a good idea but surely if it’s at the exit gate in a busy yard it’s going to create hold-ups while drivers fulfil their legal obligation to set the in-cab height marker.

Could foresee problems with scanias midlift changing height or people claiming it said x instead of what it actually said.

Personally think I’d add a digi camera showing that and numberplate (better than ANPR), so theres no dispute over what it said. And change wording to “currently your height is x”.

Overall like the idea and maybe it could be installed further back depending on site design. If its mostly your own trucks leaving then better having people change it yhere than hotting a bridge later.

Can it convert to furlongs or chains?
