Electrical question for electrically minded people

My knowledge of electrics isn’t too advanced, I know electricity comes in one way and out the other, I think, and that’s about it.
I want to be able to charge my iPhone4 in the truck but I’m too Jewish to buy a proper car charger for it, especially as I think I’ve got a way of doing it without spending a penny.
I have a TomTom Go Via 120. The lead to charge the TomTom is also a USB cable with a removable adapter on the end that goes into the 12v socket on the truck/car.
My iPhone’s charging lead is also a USB cable with a removable 3 pin plug on the end of it that goes into the wall at home.
If I plug the iPhone lead into the TomTom adapter and plug that into the 12v or 24v socket on the truck, will it charge my iPhone or will it set either me, the iPhone, or the truck on fire?

SmashedCrabFace:
will it charge my iPhone

Yes.

SmashedCrabFace:
will it set either me, the iPhone, or the truck on fire?

No.

The only caution I would add is that these USB leads do not seem to take kindly to being repeatedly plugged in and unplugged and as a USB charger is only a quid or two on ebay it might be a false economy to try to save the money.

BTW, I don’t think it’s politically acceptable to use “Jewish” as a synonym for “parsimonious” and probably hasn’t been since the days of “The Sweeney”

Maybe, but I am actually Jewish so it’s similar to people with a high melanin content in their skin calling each other the naughty N word.

irrespective of your religon, a word or phrase is offensive if it causes offence to someone…

In answer to your question, it shouldn’t hurt your iphone if you use the sat nav charger, it may even charge quicker if the sat nav plug and wire has a higher amperage rating than an original Apple one for the iphone.

Unless it’s “■■■■■”

That’s stating the obvious…however it’s not necessarily accurate in law. Millions of Blacks,Jews,Dwarfs and such-like take the mickey out of themselves all the time quite legally!!! :smiling_imp:

I think you’ll find that i quoted the legal definition of offensive words.

I’m offended by the word “religion” then.
When I say I’m Jewish I don’t mean I go to the synagogue and wear a little hat, but I am descended from such people, it’s in my blood.

…and at my previous job, I was known as “The Hairy Jew”.

This never offended me.

…it’s what I am.

ffs… buy a “car” charger for your phone, it doesnt need to have a fruit based name stamped on it, theyre only £1-£3 online or down the market, just make sure it states on it the input voltage is 12-24v or above. Otherwise the smoke genies will escape while your not looking. I bought 3 car chargers when I got my iphone, 1x for my work bag, 1x for the car & 1x for the glove box on my bike. They cost me less than £8 for the lot from a south American jungle website

As for using USB chargers from another device …If I plug my (30Gb ipod) charger into my iphone, my phone comes up with an error message stating it isn`t suitable, and will not charge

+1 and my name ends in SKI

£3 is £3.

SmashedCrabFace:
£3 is £3.

Just report back how much the repair bill for the phone is when you`ve let the smoke genies out will ya…

I hazzard a guess it`ll be more than £3

Will do.

Thats how i charge mine with no problems at all

I’ve charged my phone on many occasions with my TomTom plug. It won’t do any harm and USB leads are designed to be unplugged and plugged in repeatedly.

In fact the TomTom plug is likely a better option than a cheapo £3 thing

I have one of these to charge my iphone and handsfree kit.
