The company I work for is based in Yorkshire. We are looking at getting a couple of wagons for our job but they would be based on a contract in a different traffic area.
The question is would I be able to name myself on the O License with it been in a different traffic area? I’d be going to the site once a week to ensure the drivers are doing what they should be (walk rounds etc) but would run them from the head office as part of my full time job.
Would the TC accept this as been in “effective and continuous control”?
Cheers,

From what you’ve written, my guess is that you could have some trouble explaining to the TC just how you’d have enough time to perform all of your duties.
As you probably already know, there are stipulations regarding the number of vehicles and the hours that a TM needs to manage them.
The fact that the two operations are in different traffic areas isn’t automatically fatal to your proposed plan, but the TC knows that there are only so many hours in a week.
You haven’t mentioned the actual travel distance involved, or the time needed for your other duties at head office, so IMHO your proposed plan only might be doable since the required time for managing “a couple” of outbased vehicles is likely to be around 8hrs per week.
Can you spare yourself for 8hrs per week, or get cover for your head office job for 8hrs per week?
Provided that all the rest is in order, that’s the crunch question that the TC is likely to ask you.
At least there’s some food for thought, cos these ducks will need to be in a proper row.

Hi Mate
The travelling is about 3 hours but I would be travelling down and spending the night so no issue with hours spent in the area. We don’t run any other trucks so wouldn’t be an issue with number of vehicles and it’s only doing to be 2 trucks on the job.
At the moment I organise the sub contractors for our companies transport needs and help out with the other departments when they need help. If we got the trucks I’d just be dropping the “help” side of my job so shouldn’t be a problem satisfying the TC of my work load.
All we can do is put the application in and see what they say.
Fingers crossed.

Hi Castillidie,
I’d say this is looking somewhere near doable TBH.
When (if) you go to see the TC, I’d say it’s pretty clear that you’re looking to be compliant (they like that
) and you’ve already done the thinking and got some very sensible and practical answers ready.
IMHO, it’ll show you in a good light.
Good luck mate, I hope it works out for you.
I worked at a company in Tunbridge Wells, we had an external tm who lived in Norfolk. We got approval for this, but he had to write and explain how he would be able to conduct his duties, we explained that slot could be done by email, such emailing tacho files,he would visit the site once a month, and I would be on site to cover day to day admin and making sure trucks went for inspections, The other thing we explained was we were doing very low mileage.
I believe they’ve changed the hours guidelines recently, but basically just explain how you’re think you’re able to carry out your duties, I think as you’re a full time employee and you don’t have responsibility for other trucks you’d probably be ok.
