A coach firm that provides a bus service to DVLA staff is struggling to keep its operation going apparently.
That and the DVLA are only allowing the coaches to be half full…
Firstly, the fact these coach drivers are being paid like 24k a year it doesn’t surprise me they are jumping ship.
But a backlog of 55,000 is just stupid.
DVLA blames strikes for backlog but workers say mismanagement in pandemic led to rise in Covid cases.
They are arguing over tbh quite petty stuff while there is a shortage of HGV drivers that is impacting the entire country.
If the DVLA pulled their thumb out of their ■■■ then our driver shortage problem would be far less compared to say Germany.
Maybe the DVLA need privatizing. Run it for profit. I am sure a lot of people on here would pay the premium service rate just to get the service they expect done.
Now I dont work at the DVLA but I suspect that unlike schools, supermarkets and most private businesses it is set up in such a ‘covid-safe’ way that it means productivity is impacted greatly. So they can not deal with the backlog.
For example, I’ve had my car for like 2 months and still no logbook…
Trouble with privatising is it would lead to catastrophic service for everyone, tthey outsource all phone lines to India and any profits go to shareholders instead of reinvested to keep prices down. Watch your gas bill this winter - you will never support privatisation ever again.

I dont agree with a lot of what you say Jeff, but I wholeheartedly agree with this.
The privatisation of utilities was/is a disaster.
Just to prove that the human element of DVLA is the problem, not the whole set-up…
I took my main car off the road at the end of last month, MOT is due next week and it needs some engine work at the garage. Taxed my old banger which I use for winter commuting, and at the same time cashed in the residual tax on the Jeep. Did it on-line, all very easy, and noted the message that the cheque for the refund might take between four and six weeks to arrive.
That cheque arrived this morning; I only did the changeover last Wednesday!
They should go back to localising DVLA requirement provision at County Council offices.
Centralisation is what soviet style basket cases do with predictable soviet style results.
DVLA just needs relocating from South Wales to a part of the UK where people actually have a work ethic. It’s amazing that DVLA have have done as well as they have in finding the only two thousand people in the Principality interested in having some type of job rather than sitting around all day smoking weed and claiming benefits.

They should all buy narrowboats, then they could spend 6 months cruising & smoking whatever takes their fancy, then when the weather gets too bad for smoking weed and keeping the boat warm, they could all go off and drive wagons in the warm for 6 months till the weather improves.

No brainer, some on here swear by it
Thank you for your feedback.
I would like to point out however that firstly my job, when I choose to do it, does not involve issuing driving licences and therefore any absence from work does not unduly inconvenience others, and secondly…
Despite the question I get asked more than any other as a liveaboard narrowboater being “Does it get cold in Winter?”, in fact it doesn’t. I suppose it would if I didn’t light the fire, but then you could say that about a house.
It does get too hot in Summer but I deal with that by sitting outside.

It is quite ironic that the DVLA offices are slap bang in the middle of one of Swansea’s worst estates… the people working at the DVLA come from all over, the queues on the A48 towards the M4 at chucking out time are massive…

The Government only put DVLA there as compensation for closing down all the coal mines and steelworks and I think the wimminfolk who work there are still ■■■■■■ off about their husbands sitting at home all day while they’re at work and hanker for the olden days. But hey, that’s equality for you!
