Dummies guide to tacho machine

Evening guys

I have my first job next Saturday with an agency (class 2) as it will be my first job I have no clue on how to operate the tacho unit, buttons etc etc what to do when I’ve finished for the day ( I assume you don’t just pull out the card) how to switch modes, how to print etc etc

So what I’m really after is a complete step by step dummies guide lol! Just so I don’t turn up looking like a total tool.

Cheers!

There’s all sorts available via Google. Are you sure it’s a digital tacho? Make sure you know how to use analogue as well. Any LGV registered from May 2006 will be digital - - which leaves a fair number of analogue.

Pete

Switching modes is easy. Just hit the 1 button on the front until you get the mode you want. When I get my GoPro, I’ll try and make a video on digital tacho’s for newbies because I sure as hell didn’t know to use them when I first started.

Good luck with your first Job  Not sure if this will help:

Yeah that would be great radar19 !!

Do a google for DTCO 1381 Drivers Short Operating Instructions
That will give a basic overview with an example of manual entry

Also on Tachomaster website they have a full drivers guide.

Sorry out and about and cant post links from phone, though guides easy to find and loads of YouTube vids

Thankyou

So I’m guessing most people have to do manual entries in the morning, as no one goes to work and gets straight into their truck… ? Time spent in staff room/canteen, getting days jobs etc

Can someone give a brief explanation of what you do for the course of a day I.e put card in - select ? - do walk round check - etc? I watched the YouTube video and he goes through the buttons so I kind of get the operation, but he doesn’t say what a typical driver would do on a typical day.

Thanks.

Typical day for me starts with turning the night heater on. Then I put my card in, some drivers don’t bother with a manual entry but i do as I was agency for a while and some like to see printouts when you submit your time sheets. Once I’ve entered a manual entry I make sure its set to crossed hammers. Some units will default to break when stationary but VOSA like to see about 10 minutes of other work before you start driving.

Once that is done I start her up to warm the engine a little while I sort paperwork, setting up the satnav etc. Then its time for the walk around check. I check the lights, indictaors, number plates. I make sure there is plenty of tread in the tyres, the mudflaps are secure. I also pop the curtain to check the load. The warehouse staff don’t always secure it once its loaded so you may need to do that before you leave because if you run off like a loon you may find whatever you are hauling making a swift exit through your curtain!

If you are driving the same truck everyday there are areas where a glance is only needed but if its been left for a while or someone else has driven it since I would spend some time going over everything.

does a manual entry have to be made?

If I start at 4.30 stick my card in start up and set to other work for 10 mins while doing checks is that ok? At end of shift I tend to just park up quick word to supervisor and run like the wind, no need for a manual entry next morning?

also I do I double manned on one day of the week and the guy I work with seems to want me just to put my card in slot 1 then drive then when he is for driving he removes my card and puts his in? Should he not be using slot 2 and keep my card in?

1 - manual entry - more than likely as your virtually never going to start a shift at the exact moment you put card in, you usually have to get keys, paperwork etc then get to Truck. Same for end of shift.

Though loads just seem to not do this but that’s up to them

2 - Double manned, whoever is driving MUST put card in slot 1 so your colleague is correct

Depends if you want to use the 30 hour rule.
Both cards should be in as if your card is in slot 1 and his card isn’t in slot 2 he’s not keeping records to account for part of his day.

Hi mate, the guy tends to go on and on,but it’s good stuff

So would I have to do a manual entry for the time I finish to the time I get back into work ? ‘My overnight Rest period’ or could I just put it into rest mode when I leave the truck for the day ? I get that I will have to do manual entry for the time either side of getting in the truck in the morning and in the evening.

This is what i do mate, i finished today at 5.30 but ejected my card about 5.20, so when i go in tomorrow at 7.00 i will insert my card it will load and ask if i want to do a manual entry i move the arrows to yes and press enter it will display the last time i ejected the card, the mode will start flashing use the arrow keys to put it on hammers press enter then the date will flash use arrow keys to set date for 19/01/15 press enter then the time will flash (5.20 as thats when i ejected card) use the arrow to set time to 5.30 press enter it will go back to the mode flashing again so i would use arrow keys to set to break press enter the date will flash 20/01/15 press enter the time will be flashing use arrow keys to set time to 7.00 press enter (it will be about 7.10 by the time i get in truck) use arrow to set mode to hammers press enter to set date 20/01/15 press enter use arrows to set time just keep pushing the arrow key till it reaches the current time press enter thats you sorted ready for the days fun and games. Hope that makes sense.

Hi scottishttrucker

So if I’ve understood that correct you’ve done 3 manual entries?

1 for your ten mins other work
1 for your rest period I.e time at home
1 for your ten mins or so other work before you get in truck?

Sorry for the amateur questions ! Very new to this!
