Recently I had been sent out on a job by the agency, but the vehicle had a defective gearbox and it took me 30 minutes trying to stick it in to reverse to back it out the yard. speaking to other drivers at the company they all said its been like that for ages and most drivers refused to drive it, so i went and told the TM that the vehicle was unfit for the road due to having a gearbox issue and refused to drive it . Was i right to do that ?

There is no need to have a hissy fit with the TM, just defect the truck until it is fixed, could be something like a weak cab suspension unit or a bent selector. Think of your pocket, you get paid 30 minutes a day more than the other drivers
If the gearbox was genuinely as defective as you say then I would say you were right to refuse to drive it.
