Driving LGV without a LGV license of any kind

First off sorry if this has been spoken of a thousand times, but I don’t really have the time to go searching right now yet I need some clarification.

My cousin just gave it the big one to me about how he’s a ‘trucker’, yet does not need a class c to drive this particular vehicle at his work because it comes under in his words “plant”. He claimed he’s able to drive around an 18 ton merc rigid used to hold the equipment they use to lay road markings (car park white lines) with no license and all with no tacho.

I called bull instantly, but after a quick google it seems there are far more exemptions than I ever thought. But surely they wouldn’t allow a non qualified person to drive unlimited distance, over an unlimited time, in an 18ton truck just because its carrying some generators and some boilers with paint in, could they?

Someone in the know please clarify, thanks

Thanks ROG, I had seen this site and although it says the plant exemption thing exists, to me it seems a pretty big stretch to go classing the vehicle in question an “engineering plant” vehicle.

If the equipment is a permanent mount ie designed to be used mounted on the vehicle and is not able to be ‘off loaded’ then yes its classed as plant.
