so there are good paying driving jobs out there without doing 70+hours per week? or can i only dream, a bit off the thread but i was chatten to a driver he said join agency as a ltd company and you can make more money in way of claiming for expences like food per day, petrol etc…he mentioned it costs 20 quid per week for the umbrella company to sort out your taxes, does this sound familiar to some?

It sounds very familiar, usually called Nova, and has been around for ages. It’s is a rip off at £20 a week. You can do it your self or get an accountant to do it for much less.

so its just a matter of simple book keeping? as a new company do you still get grace on the first two years or is different now, or would it be best to visit citizen’s advice for a basic run down on how it works, unless its on here sumwere.

Looks like I’m here bit late, but I do drive for dominos double maned artic for over 30k+/y and no we do not work 60h/week for this money.

There are good paying driving jobs out there without the long hours, not just tankers. I know of somewhere where there on 25k + but there average hours in a week are 45. But the highest total hours for the week ive seen is 55  Just got to know where to look!

I always take it with a pinch of salt when people say they earn over £30,000 .
I know petrol tankers do but thats about it.

Plenty more than tanker drivers do, it’s getting to be a bit of a myth it’s only tanker drivers who can earn decent enough money in this game. European drivers where I was working all do better than £30K, my top line for this tax year will be around the £36K mark and would have been more if I had done the whole year, although that will include night out money. You are welcome to take that with as big a pinch of salt as you like but this is the latest payslip I have to hand, week 49 of the tax year.

Over seven and a half grand in tax… Is it worth it?

I thought I was doing ok earning £22,000+ last year and on target for £25,000 this year but I posted ‘My job up for grabs’ on DRIVER VACANCIES at the beginning of this week and have only had 2 replies so far and no takers ? I thought there would be a bit more interest in a job with your own Volvo unit and dedicated trailer, all in A1 condition, 0800-16:30 Mon to Fri, plenty of overtime, no nights out and no weekend work, nice small friendly company with no hassle and even an analog tacho !! But maybe as an old codger I’m behind the times and Class 1 drivers expect more than this nowadays ?

Its just not good money in relation to the cost of living? It might pay better than many worse paying jobs but that alone doesn’t qualify it as “good money” nor do any of the figures quoted above come onto that category. Drivers were earning GOOD money 30 odd years ago but the rise and rise of 3rd party logistics companies like Stobarts,Wincanton,Exel etc., slaughtered that.

And then you’ve got to get on with the bloke you’re double-manning with…

I had an incident last year at Luxembourg Airport. The bloke I was double-manning with had been winding me up all the way there. Comments like ‘you shouldn’t do that’, you shouldn’t do this’, ‘what are you doing that for?’, ‘why are you going this way?’ and so on. In the end, whilst unloading, I completely lost it. If he hadn’t locked himself in the back of the truck I would’ve put him into hospital. He reappeared an hour or so later after I’d calmed down and it was quite an uncomfortable atmostphere during the day or so back to the UK.

But what is good pay/job to 1 person may not be to another as we are all different

Really depends on your living standards & what you expect also where you live in the country

Neil why is your tax code only 647L    mine is much higher
