Driving career-so closeto sayin stuff it

If that’s true Clarkyboy, I take back my advice.

I’ve been driving class one for 14 years, 8 of those in the British Army. I have a massive amount of experience and yet here I am, sitting at home today because the agency I’m with didn’t call me yesterday to offer me any work, so I’m sat here earning nothing.

I was lucky and got on artics two weeks after passing my test. I started with a local firm on general haulage. I spent all week out in a truck that was falling to bits. I got all the ■■■■ runs as I was the newbie. But I got my head down and learnt what I could using it as a stepping stone to something better. I bet most of us on here are the same.

If I was the guy who put you in contact with this haulier I would be fuming. How embarrassing for the guy. Haulage is a small world and word gets around. If that was me in your position I would have given the driver who took the time to show you the ropes your 100% attention. You should have shown some respect. All that will happen is that the haulier who will give a newbie a chance will now think twice. These people are busy trying to keep their employees in work so they can feed their families, the last thing they want is for some new guy to mess around and not show any interest.

Like I said, this only applies if what is said is true. If this is indeed what has happened then you need to take a cold hard look at what you want to do.

if it is true i think he will need more than body armour mate!

right, myself and nianiamh have put our cards on the table with this, not to stir or cause offence to any other net members.the facts stated are true,i have better things to do with my time than type bs out with a 2 fingered typing ability!
i have a mate who is near on 65,spent his life in haulage, and due to “varied” driving jobs hes had,has no company pension etc to fall back on.hes always had work, never had to look too far, but,in the current job market, has not worked for nearly 2 months!ive asked about, hopefully something for him at weekend.but, after putting myself in touch with nianiamh, who contacted ? haulier for a tnet member,we both ended up lookin like monkeys, and the member now spouts a sob story…draw your own conclusions, ive said my piece on the matter. :imp: and will only recommend friends i personally know for any future employment vacancies i hear about.

lets set the record straight here, there was no definate job offe,r only a may be. he didnt have work for the wagon full time,at that particular time i had a problem doing mondays due my 9 mth old boys childcare, the phone calls i took were to do with a job that i am in now and that was a shop job to provide for my 2 children and my mortgage and that was it.they asked me to call at a certain time that afternoon but i had offerd to stay out later in the hope to learn a bit more,i phoned them to explain and that was it.with regarrds to what i was taught that day with roping and sheeting i think i could quite possibly rope and sheet a trailer how i was taught.the eddie stobart comment is true it is always som.ething i have wanted to do.if it appeared i wasnt taking an interest in what your mate was doing whooshwhoosh then i apologise to tim for giving that impression.i was practising dolly knots with him on the trailer so i dont see how i gave that impression.i really do apologise to tim coz i thought je was a nice bloke.obviously your opinions are made of me now but i had totake the shop job coz it was garaunteed and the “if the work picks up job offer” i couldnt take a risk coz i mite not have been in my house now to explain this.mondays are now not an issue so i am looking for class 1.work.your opinions are made of me now so i it will be like pssing into the wind.

Fair play to you clarkyboy for coming on here and putting your side.

Thee are always two sides to every story and each individuals perceptions of a situation are different.

further to the being on the trailer i was,and i was asking the best way to distribete the weight etc,i felt that i shouldnt get hands on as i would have been hindering the guy teaching me.i even roped the side of the trailer whilst i was at the docks.i really think this is being blown well out of praportion. also i done all of this out of my own pocket…it was in my own interest to take notice and i learnt a hell of a lot, also i offerd the proposed employer that i would work tuesday to saturday or sunday to compensate for me not being able to do mondays but he said all his work was mainly mon-fri and sat/sun didnt really need covering in this economic climate.he said he needed mon - fri which at that time unfortunately for me should a job ahve come out of it i couldnt do.i hope this explains things a little better for people

whooshwhoosh you have a pm

clarkyboy:
whooshwhoosh you have a pm

i hope its a nice one.

why dont you call round the haulier in question explian your now situation that you can do mondays and se how you get on. it sometimes pays to beg and grovel.

As for roping and sheeting I wouldn’t do it again. That was not even on an artic, just a long 7.5 tonne flat back and to be honest it was nasty.

You don’t see many wagons anymore with the rope and sheet. If anyone mentions to me anything to do with ropes and sheets I run a mile :unamused:

Hi, lads chippy’s right, sheets should only be for beds, but nobody had ivented trucks with curtains and containers when we oldies started, there were low bridges everywhere, lots of local railways were still running, and if they were’nt ,the briges still had’nt been taken down, lots of 10ft high bridges still around, we must had been crackers to do the job, “D.D…D "
daft, dumb, dedicated was that what it was or was it desperate??
ta-ta stan the man (72)
it’s only a piece of steel
