Driving back from Italy

I am flying out to Turin tomorrow, bringing back new unit and car transporter, any advice appreciated ie Toll roads or National, Mont Blanc, Frejus or Swiss ■■?

From Turin I would come back Via Frejus but not sure of any special requirements re car transporter.

Italy law requires headlights on in day time.
I would take the toll roads back, the free nationals are slow, with agricultural machinery and traffic jams.
If coming back via the Mount Blanc, you must stop before getting there to collect a ticket from a man in an office.
Failure results in being turned back to get it, about a 60 mile round trip or more.
It is for emissions numbering to go through the tunnel.
European law requires a hiviz to be worn when stood in the road for a breakdown.
Two warning triangles.
Both the Frejus and Blanc have speed radars inside and gap measuring, the fines are a lot if caught.
Measure the truck height and Google the height limits for which tunnel you use.
Fire extinguishers must be valid in testing and the security pin intact.
No photocopies of the truck documents are accepted by the Police.
Originals only.
An attestation activity letter is required if no tacho records for the last 28 days.
Fine for no letter is about 3000 euros or more.
Sat nav with radar detecting is illegal in France, big fine or confiscation of the vehicle or immobilized until the fine is paid in full at the road side.
Breakdown cards and tyre call out cards are advisable.
If your truck has been stood for a while, battery jump start cables is an idea.

Apart from all that, enjoy the scenery and mountain views of whichever tunnel or pipe you choose, you may noticed the Italian trucks do not hang around and fly past with no limiter.
Lavaza coffee is everywhere, but truckstops are rare as hens teeth.
Roadside family owned Tavernas and pizza restaurants are common, but some have odd closing times.
In most towns there is fast food, such as Kebab shops.
The French free nationals are also slow, more fuel is used, and get nowhere fast.
In both countries, the food on the toll road is high quality, ask for a drivers discount, you may have to fill in a form, to receive a loyalty card.
Autogrill is great .
If stopped by the Douanes or customs, remain calm and polite, they test drivers out by ruffling their feathers, at the end of the control check, you end up cracking jokes about UK ex Prime Ministers, and they love jokes about French ex Presidents, Grand nez Sarkozy, or big nose.

Just don’t mention Agincourt or Waterloo

Especially Waterloo, it was 200 years ago this year.
Apparently the French authorities are a little ‘sensitive’ about it.
Belgium wanted to mint a special €2 commemorative coin in honour of it, France declined to vote in favour, claiming it would go against EU unity :unamused: :unamused:
