Driving assessment as a newbie - what to expect

Hi all,

I have a ‘CPC evaluation, a face to face competency interview and also a driving assessment’ at fresh direct.

Not driven a truck since passing in Feb, and this would be my first role in the industry.

I know the role itself is multi drop with early starts (did similar in a van years ago).

Any advice or info on what I should expect? Any tips on what I should revise etc? Anyone done the same?

Many thanks.

Most driving assesments are the same all over, a 30 min drive to see that you can drive without causing chaos. Some have a quiz on H&S and driving hours. All pretty much simple stuff and nothing too worry over, just brush up on your driver hours.

Just ask the spotty assessor kid how long he’s had his lisense, when he comes back with his 2/3 yrs , remindhim you’ve had yours for 35 yrs , soon takes the wind out there sails !!

Any decent company would not employ an assessor that had only been driving 2 years however saying that he could have far less bad habits than someone with 35 years driving experience.

That’s a really good way to get off on the wrong foot. He’ll have you marked down as a cocky know-it-all from the outset.

I’ve seen more than a few fairly new drivers who are far more competent than some of those who are heading towards retirement. There’s one fairly new driver I know of who can reverse an artic anywhere, there’s one guy at one of our subbies who struggles to get a trailer into a space in a trailer park that’s two bays wide and if he can do a changeover with you without having to reverse he will. Same driver has brought us so many loads that have shifted to the point the driver he’s changing with has refused to take them I’m surprised he’s still on the job.

So went for the interview today lasted about 30mins. Friendly guy called John whose been at the company for 21 years and driving even longer. (No spotty kids there).

Went out for a 20min driving assesment, called his manager out and they both offered me the job there and then.

Pretty happy. 1st HGV job, no agency and it’s an established company so job security etc all there.

Bit of a commute, very early starts and multidrop with handballing, but I don’t mind that. Will keep me fit(ish) and get to pick up the kids everyday from school and spend sometime with them.

Excellent, well done!
Just out of interest, is this in a rigid?

I think you misunderstand the idea of an assessment. It’s not intended to identify the best/most suitable candidate or to rank applicants in order of ability- the aim is simply to sift out those whose driving doesn’t come up to a required standard. Doesn’t matter if you have 100 applicants or only 1.

That’s right. Was out in a 18ton today with a tail lift.

Not mis understanding anything about what an assesment is for. It is a simple thing to either put the assesment as easy or as it should be. When haulage companies need bums on seats then the assesment including H&S takes a back seat to money. Same as making the LGV test simpler to suit the “driver shortage” All in all assesments and H&S when it suits.

[. Same as making the LGV test simpler to suit the “driver shortage” ts.

When and how are they proposing to do that?

Dropping the need to do class 2 tests before class 1, carrying out the reversing and coupling exercises separately. These all decrease the chance of failing the main part of the tests therefore making it simpler
