Driver training at Leconfield! 1986

those were the days, although I went through there in 79/80

That place has changed a bit in recent years. Spent too long driving round that dump.

I did my first rally at Leconfield about 86,in a Rover SD1 3.5.

Down the main straight at 140 mph!!!

Better than ■■■.

Ken.

nice pic mate. The motors have changed a bit lately they are running man drawbars now they must have hundreds i see them allover north humberside.

Aye, Ryder have the contract, it’s worth millions apparently.

There’s about 120 out on any given day, each one triple manned (two students, one instructor).

Leconfield provide driver training, as well as other specialist driving courses for all three of the forces.

They’re recruiting at the moment, anyone who’s had they’re LGV C for at least five years and 6 points or less can apply. They provide any further training required.

wow that looks a bit different from how it was when I was there! Done my driver training in 2001! Great fun! Was a dissapointment though to join the RAF as a driver with the promise of ‘truckin’ and then to hardly ever drive anything bigger than a minibus!! Glad to be out now though and finally gaining some experience!

kinell, that brought back memories i thought id lost forever.
i was a driver in the raf and i got sent to leconfield in 1989 at 19 yrs old to do class one. :sunglasses:
was expecting a leyland mastiff or seddon atki like the raf had but not a titchy bedford.
co driver for the week was a ghurka, i could,nt understand a word he said but we had a good laugh.
stopped at some cafe in a narrow street. instructor asked me to park right up close to the kerb anyhow as we are coming out the cafe a jogger comes running around the corner and ran straight into the mirror of the truck :open_mouth:
it broke his nose  and they say running is good for you

my truck was a wee bit different though. it had a concrete block bolted to the bed of the trailer.probably to get it within the required weight limits or summit.

I did my driver training at RAF St Athan, i was crewed up with a Navy guy who was on submarines, god know’s what he needed a licence for? Had a great time, i was one of the last people to do my test in a bedford before they went to leylands, barry island and cardiiff city centre…green waggon please give way…not a chance! Anyway, out on the lash every night with the navy boys and out driving the next day, had a great time and passed 1st time!
