Give it time they have been making noises about it for a while and have gone after the umbrella scheme.
My main gripe is I can see how a genuine freelance driver who does a few days or a couple of weeks at different firms is self employed but someone who works at the same firm all the time is an employee.
Add to that to many who go ltd think a pound an hour over the PAYE rate is a good deal as they can put in claims for phone bills and other stuff and take some wage As a dividend
To save tax.
The only one it benefits is the opearator as it costs around a third on top of the drivers wage to cover the employers obligations for a PAYE driver to cover holiday pay employers no etc
Our gripes are mutual! By the time you strip pension liabilities, holiday pay and sick pay out, that tax dodging dividend has a lot to make up.
I’m not against self employed per se, but I am against it being abused as it now undoubtedly is. And I wouldn’t like to see people being screwed by HMRC if they ever do chase those that don’t fit the parameters, after its been encouraged by those who won’t be picking up the bill.
Spot on it’s the guys who think they are a business genius doing it and take the ■■■■ out of paye mugs that annoy me.
I’m on various truck related Facebook groups and it comes up all the time and usually the ones shouting about how well off they are come on asking is there any work about in slack times as they have been laid off as soon as it’s slack.

Im a little out of touch with UK tax laws, ive been on the Spanish system for years running a one man band S.L company but as far as i can remember being self employed meant having income from more than one source. Sounds like the guys you mention are not truly self employed but have their eggs all in one basket working for one company only…

The problem is no one wants to be a Truck Driver its simple. Gone are the old days of camaraderie etc. Its every man for himself now days. I have 5 vacancies for UK Tramping paying £31.5k Pa + Nights out and overtime Based in Suffolk and Immingham and the applications are almost at Zero. I have just taken one lad on x Army who has 2 years experience and he is Brilliant. That’s the other stumbling block also. 2 years experience. My insurers will not even offer the option of a increased Excess to take younger lads with little or no experience on either. Its a crazy world in the trucking Business at the moment.
Those ex-army guys are model employees. Trained with obedience and respect. Yes sir!
Strange you have 5 vacancies and paying “£31.5k pa + nights out” tho. I suspect you require the whole card filled and more?
Companies can’t keep ‘good drivers’ because their perception of such a driver differs so much.
I really hope you are not implying what i read your comment as. The answer is no. max hours possible yes. But bent running no. 2 infringements in a month without good reason dont slam the door on your way out. Oh and green light 0 on both counts also. not bad for 85 trucks eh.

I see from another thread that Goldstar pay £7.40 an hour for Class 1 drivers.
My son is 18 years old and he earns £8.00 an hour mopping floors and emptying bins at the local hospital.
So what was this about a “driver shortage” again?
^^^^ Please say you are kidding…? That is shocking if so.
I know a place where the Fixed daily rate= £4.80ph for a 15 hour spread before tax. And that’s for Euro fridge work
I knew a company who were set up like that many years ago, but I thought they had moved on to a ‘normal’ pay set up. Hmm, I wonder if it’s the same one…

Indeed. So what’s the hourly rate when you ignore all the window dressing? £8?

Then the drivers need to make sure their total hours across 2 weeks average no less than £7.20 an hour. Salary pay doesn’t exempt employers from the nmw

Perhaps you get a big shiny flash Scania to make up for it

Oh yeah get the government involved, that’ll sort things out.
British Rail
British Telecom
British Steel
British Road Services
British Leyland
British Gas
British Coal
Anybody see a pattern when the government get involved in free market business…
Here’s a current story regarding the railways. I FLY to see family because it’s way cheaper than the train! And two of the worst companies for customer service are British Gas and British Telecom…ask me how I know!

Yes if you genuinely do temporary driving for different firms fair enough you can be self employed.
But if you go to the same place every day doing the same thing you should be on paye

Not surprisingly being that those examples were actually privatised long ago in which the aim was then no longer running them with public finance in the public’s interest and to maximum employment opportunities. As opposed to running them in the interests of maximum profit for those at the top.
As for rail it isn’t surprising that would always struggle because it’s basically an inefficient form of transport that can’t cover its total costs, especially its infrastructure costs. The result being that road transport is then subject to unfair handicaps to keep rail viable. On that note using coach services instead of rail was also always a cheaper option than rail.
While cheap air fairs are the worst of all worlds situation of similar fuel taxation breaks enjoyed by the rail sector.Combined with a similar situation of race to the bottom terms and conditions for its workforce which too often affect road transport.
When realistically, given a level playing field regards fuel costs and a strong unionised workforce and government control of rates,it’s the road transport sector, both passenger and freight, which can ultimately provide the ideal balance,in maximising employment opportunities and providing economic efficiency and customer service levels.

In a nutshell you’re little more than a nuisance to them. One day a week on PAYE isn’t what they’re looking for. What agency were you working for so others can avoid wasting time with them?
