Driver Hire Nationwide

Hi, has anyone worked or currently working for Driver Hire. I am considering registering with them. What are they like? What kind of work do they offer? I’m considering registering with the Swansea branch

Branch differs from area to area. What I know from my area is they charge the company more than most other agencies & pay the driver less.

As I said differs from area to area.

I’m registered with the Aberdeen branch.

I think they are all franchises?

Dave

Iv been with them for a number of years and if it wasnt for them, no one would have started me. So i find them excellent.

The branch I did a bit for liked to cancel me and send another driver to “make it fair to other drivers” and tell lies to the customer that I was ill.
Oh and they pay via an umbrella scheme.
Get a real job instead.

Driver Hire is a franchise, you can tell when they lie, their mouth opens. Don’t just register with one agency. There is no loyalty in that game.

The Gatwick/crawley branch are useless, always advertising for work they don’t have.

Many years ago I worked through them at Ipswich, York and Inverness and they were franchises but got plenty of work and without any problems but like I said many years ago now so things may well have changed for the worst …

I do work for one of their branches. I only do paye and get holiday pay although when I started with them they did push umbrella but I flatly refused. I get enough work from them, in fact only had a couple of days off this year when it’s usually quiet. Money depends on what client and class of vehicle but overall I am pretty happy with them. As has been said they are franchises so different from branch to branch.

All agencies are the same. But then an experienced agency driver is the same. It’s a parasitic relationship on both sides. My agency will dump me like a shot when work goes slack and they have some eastern European prepared to work for £3 an hour less than me and I will dump them like a shot when the sun is shining and I decide to go boating.

The first agency I signed up for in Birmingham. And always gave me lots of work. Not the best paying. But never messed me around with money and put up with my horrendous accident rate when I first passed. I don’t really have anything bad to say about Caz (the owner in Birmingham) or her business.

From what I understand they are all franchises and each will be different.

Only thing I would say… Is that they seem to have more ad hoc casual work than the ‘agency’ full time jobs which seem so popular. For me it was great. I did loads of stuff and enjoyed it a lot.

long while back I worked for the one in Northampton for about 2 weeks, wasn’t impressed.

They are franchises so the quality of service varies from branch to branch
I found DH Shrewsbury to be excellent.
Make sure you register with ( and do a few jobs for at least two agencies/branches.
If you don’t, the taxman may claim that you are actually employed.
Develop a good relationship with the agency
Raise an invoice regularly showing how many hours you did for which client, at what rate. It is then up to the agency to challenge any differences, not vice versa.

Yes, they’re all franchises, their webpage states “Driver Hire was one of the pioneers of franchising in the UK, and we remain committed to the concept”
After I’d passed my test (about 11years ago) I worked for the one in Huddersfield for about 6-9 months, the pay wasn’t great but… as a newly qualified driver I was just happy to get some work to cut my teeth on and this seemed the most important thing to me.

I’m about to register with the two branches nearest to me, as my current agency (Drivers Direct) are (I’ve toned this down for the benefit of the moderators) “somewhat less than satisfactory…”

I signed up with Driver hire in Sheffield about 18 months ago, I had a call asking if I was available for some class 1 work, I was, so asked the rate, it was £8.65 per hour, no chance was my reply, never had a call since.

Still get the odd text from DH, the last one was a few months ago and I could tell it was where I work. The hourly rate was considerably lower than I’m on too.

…They must have a lot of mug drivers on their books - if they are able to get away with a double-ender whammy like THAT! :open_mouth: :open_mouth:

…My advice is to always ask “What are your PAYE rates. I don’t want to go Self-Employed or Ltd Company EVER - so let’s just cut to the chase eh?” :arrow_right:

I used to be with them six or seven years ago .
Only on vans and 7.5t work .
I always asked plenty of questions about where I was working for and always got the details and rates emailed to me . I got to be preferred driver for one client but it was a fair distance away from home and when we had operation stack in place it resulted in very very long days and high costs to travel to work , so I binned it which upset Driver Hire and the work dried up from them apart from phone calls at silly oclock for jobs 100 miles away that started in an hour .
