Drive a class c on a pcv licence?

Sorry to resurrect this one but was looking at that bus camper conversion on ebay.
So if I bought a single decker with all its seats, I wouldn’t be able to drive it on my own on my class C as a large vehicle? But if all the seats were removed I could?

Yes but I think DVLA must redefine it before you can do so

What will the GVW be once redefined :question:

Me again i am trying to get my head round the pcv and class c,if i obtained a pcv licence could i drive a class c rigid vehicle ?,

no mate you need an lgv licence to drive lgvs and psv licence to driver buses, coach

Licence catagories
PCV = ‘D’
LGV = ‘C’
Generally, getting one does not mean you can drive the other (I think there might be, not sure, a right to drive an empty PCV on a C - but not certain of that)

thats correct,also thought u cud drive a loaded one as long as its not 4 hire and reward but not 1oo%on that one

To drive a coach/bus on a C licence you need to have held the licence for two years and can only drive it to a place of repair or test driving after a repair, merely being empty would not be allowed.

Class 2 drivers can drive buses providing they have been passed their test 2 years and they have no passengers on, think it was meant for mechanics etc.
I think PSV drivers can also drive wreckers.

If you have an auto pcv and you pass your class 2 you get a manual pcv

I get the best of both worlds then - can drive a full manual PSV and class 1 vehicles :sunglasses:
The last bit is sort of correct - only if the wrecker is NOT towing a bus and is returning to base :wink:
The fitters at Stagecoach wouldnt let me drive their one, nor would I really want to - an old W reg DAF :open_mouth:

Prison vans that are based on LGV’s are counted as PCV’s so a bus driver could drive one of them loaded :wink:

Ive always wondered what licence you needed to drive one of them :sunglasses:

I am fairly sure this is the way it works and can be strange -

Firstly it goes on the weight so if a vehicle is plated at 10 tonnes then that is LGV ‘C’

If the same 10 tonne vehicle then gets more than 9 but less than 17 seats fitted (including the driver seat) then it becomes a PCV ‘D1’ - more than 17 seats it becomes PCV ‘D’

Class2ldn:
If you have an auto pcv and you pass your class 2 you get a manual pcv

If true,does that work the other way round ? Would an existing Class 2 holder only need to pass an auto test in a bus to be rewarded with a manual and auto licence ?

It is true although the other way round would be an auto only C holder taking their test in a manual bus; I don’t think that would upgrade (ROG will confirm :slight_smile: )or be a likely scenario.

If you have manual C then you get manual D (if D passed in auto) no matter which way around they are done.

Having manual C+E and auto D will automatically give manual D+E without taking a D+E test - again, it does not matter which order they are done in.

WARNING - DVLA often miss the above so it’s worth checking the licence carefully

Id best give them a ring then, my licence came back from renewal with the D+E and D1+E as provisional… :unamused:

As I know you have D and CE then that is deffo not right

A C licence holder can drive a bus in a voluntary capacity .E.G. if you work in a place that does buses and haulage and you are a ,say tipper driver.,you could borrow a bus to take your sons football team to an away match just dont expect to get paid for doing it.

Techincally, (not 100%) sure but a Cat C can only drive a bus when it is for repair as soon as it is repaired it becomes a service vehicle again and you require a PCV to drive as when I was a drive on the spare rota some of the fitters never a PCV only a cat C so could drive it there but not back hence a driver having to go with them. with a mini bus if it is a cat D1 then a driver of a Cat C would still requrire a Cat D1 to drive it even if it is not for Hire and Reward because legally you have to have the legal cat for that vehicle its the same as saying a Cat B driver could drive it cause it is not for H&R again not 100% correct but thats the impression I have always had … Regarding the Prison Vans … due to some of the Vans having over 16 seats that is why they need a PCV … however I have noticed they dont have operator disc in the screen why not they are not exempt they are private companies transporting prisoners for money therefore tehy are for Hire and Reward that has always confused me … I no HMP vehicles are Tax and OPO exempt being the crown vehicles but the likes of Serco and Group 4 are not■■?
