probably REALLY dumb ones…
With the horsebox swap nearly complete, my over-active brain is fizzing on and although I don’t really NEED living, it might be nice to have it. As I can tow 3.5T on my licence, the idea of getting a box van drawbar trailer and converting into living might be good fun! Before you say get a caravan, I reckon that a caravan behind a stick sided horsebox wouldn’t get many invitations to spend the night, if you see what I mean. I also like the idea of having proper brakes on the thing.
Have had a browse and there don’t seem to be many at 3.5T. Any suggestions on where to look? Do they exist?
Also, would it be a pig to tow? I know that a short trailer isn’t a easy to drive as a long one…
Does your horsebox have a side or rear ramp ?
Rear
Not a problem for everyday use…I know it is potentially an issue for emergencies, but I can’t really think of a scenario where one couldn’t unhitch and pull away. Am I being too optimistic?
Unhitching every time you want to drop the ramp gets boring
Very boring! But as I would be using it only for the odd weekend away and running without it most of the time, not that much of a problem.
I do think it’s do-able, but trailers of that size are like hens teeth. Would mean cutting down a bigger trailer, downrating it…all sort of starts to mount up. Doesn’t it always?
Just thought, Is your Renault drawbar spec ? If not you’ll need a lot of pipes, probably have to modify the braking system and submit a notifiable alteration to Dvsa
Probably simpler to use something with over-run brakes
Have thought of that already, having totted it up I think you may be right.
Oh well, that’s the whole point of bouncing ideas around, you get the daft ones shot down. Lots of fun can still be had with a little trailer project I guess…
Why not just put the horses in the trailer and have a really…really big living…
Yes they do exist. Saw a curtain sided 3.5t draw bar trailer on ebay a couple of months ago but can’t find a pic of it now. About 16’ long. It was made for exhibition work and I can’t remember the make now but it was some german sounding word ?
It is just a caravan style ball hitch as only 3.5t so no need for air or anything. It looked good stable and a box version with living in it would make a good alternative to pulling a caravan.
Something like this but just 2 axles and not quite as long.

Ifor Williams do a good range - will be pricey though.

The ex-MOD one looks great, but I can’t see one losing enough weight to make it work.
Yes, the Ifor Eventa with the horse bit turned into living would be perfect. Not cheap though and a bit of a cheat, half the fun would be in making it…and would be nice if it sat on 16" or 17.5" wheels to look in proportion.
