Purely a paperwork excercise that you do at your local test station.
VTG10 form which I think you can download on the VOSA/dvla site.
Book a time, new red plates and away you go.
From vosa site;
This applies to the following:

Book a time, new red plates and away you go.
From vosa site;
This applies to the following:
- Where weight limits change and the
vehicle has the design capacity.
-A change of tyre size or capacity.
-A change of registration number
(cherished transfer)
Procedure
1 Complete form VTG10
2 Submit VTG10 together with the
appropriate fee, the current plating
certificate (VTG7) or type approval
certificates to your local test station or
Welcombe House and in the case of
cherished transfers, the registration
document.
3 In most cases it will not be necessary
to present the vehicle to a test station.
Notes
In order to ensure the integrity of the
system, the Vehicle and Operator
Services Agency will examine a
proportion of these vehicles and target
checks where necessary.Form download here

Only some testing stations will do it:apparently it’s at the Managers discretion.We used to downplate all of ours at Royston.When we needed to get one done on the hurry-up,(truck leaving for Europe for 6 week trip on the 1st of the month,didn’t want to pay 40t tax for 2 months),the office staff refused,stated that the Manager said they didn’t have to do it,they were too busy.No inspection was needed,just a couple of forms and a rubber stamp.
Must be so nice to be able to pick and choose whether to do what the taxpayer pays you to do…
It seems that everything is ‘discretionary’ at a test station, especially work!
I needed to book another truck in for test at short notice (truck sales that’s why) and was told there was no slots. I had another booked and I was the only one there, it felt like the Marie Celeste, but the trouble is that if you rock the boat, you pay a dear price.
So you only need to fill in the form? No changes to the vehicle.
What about the Curtainside or a Box. Is that easy to fit?
thanks
