Sorry to revive the old thread, but just a bit of information. I have Tachomaster on my laptop, underneath the PCMCIA slot on the left hand side is a smartcard reader built in!
The Laptop is a Dell Latitude D600, and reads my digi card perfectly.

Have you seen the new digifob that is aimed at drivers and at £25 is a much cheaper solution - you might even get your boss to get you one )

But you can get the same information from any digital tachograph, it doesnt even have to be from the same company althogh the bloke whos truck might get a tad peeved if you decide to print all your records instead of view the display
I bought a reader off ebay £4.99 and £1.95 postage - works great.
Using it with the Tachodisk software that has a 28 day free trial -just for fun.
Search ebay for - GemPC USB-SL Smart Card Reader USB
Has no one found any free software to use all the time?
I have searched around and as yet have not found any free software for downloading or storing Digi Tacho data. As suggested in earlier posts the choice lies between an on-line service usually charging about a pound a week or something you install on your own PC. Tachodisc in Warrington do Clockwatcher which is good but geared more towards operators use. Costs about £95 plus £1 a week to use. They do a new product called ISL Lite but I cannot find any details on cost for that. What you use depends on whether you want to just store your downloaded information or analyse it to see where you are up to with your hours etc.
