Hi, if the wife drives solo tractor unit for 3.5 hours on her class c license, and I travel as passenger. could I then start a 15 hour shift ?

That’s an interesting question!!
Assuming you are both together under the multi-manning rules for the whole shift from when she started to when you finished then the question is -
Does a C driver count as a second driver when the C becomes a CE?
I know that being a passenger does not exclude you from being on duty.
- Any time spent travelling to a location to take charge of a
vehicle falling within the scope of this Regulation, or to return
from that location, when the vehicle is neither at the driver’s
home nor at the employer’s operational centre where the
driver is normally based, shall not be counted as a rest or
break unless the driver is on a ferry or train and has access to a
bunk or couchette.

No.
Thanks for your responses.
I guess I start a 15 hour shift then from when we start, but retain 9/10 hours available driving time when we get back to where the trailer is parked and the wife finishes her driving stint ?
It will be the first time the wife drives in anger, don’t know who is the most nervous.
Double manning shifts require both the drivers to be in the cab for the shift - although there is provision for one driver to collect the other - if one driver isn’t going to be available for the whole shift it isn’t double manning and therefore i would expect your scenario would be feasable - as long as your wife isn’t going all the way with you - ( i await the rude comments)
i have hitched a lift with a driver from our yard to cambridge - he has then taken his stuff and card from the truck and i have continued to drive a full shift - i wasn’t being paid whilst i was a passenger - only paid while my card is in the head - not double manning as not both doing a shift together -
cheers
Steve

One of those drivers is not available for the whole shift as she doesn’t have the required licence category to drive the vehicle once the trailer has been hooked.
The other driver has spent time travelling to the place he will take over the truck and this counts as being at work, he can record break during the travelling time but his shift started when they both left to collect the trailer.
If having the required category to drive the vehicle wasn’t a requirement of the multi-manning rules then the OP could take his wife with him every shift and stick a chart, or her driver card, in the second driver position, and work 21 hours between rest periods. But he would not be multi-manning as she clearly cannot be a driver when the trailer is attached.

That wasn’t legal under EU rules if the time from when you left your yard to when you finished your shift was more than 15 hours, or 13 if you had no reduced daily rest period s available, or if you did not record that time by use of a chart, digi card or manual entry. It doesn’t matter that you were not being paid during the trip to Cambridge, you travelled from your usual base to take over a vehicle elsewhere and that time cannot be counted as rest. This situation was tested before the courts 10 years ago.

Thank you for that answer
I’ve just realised that the answer was in the regs
‘multi-manning’ means the situation where, during each
period of driving between any two consecutive daily rest
periods, or between a daily rest period and a weekly rest
period, there are at least two drivers in the vehicle to do
the driving.

Of course it was.
She could drive with L plates. This wouldn’t change owt hours wise and any time she is you couldn’t be on a break as you’d be instructing.

i was wondering whether she could drive a tractor on a c class as well

I never thought of that!!
I think all C drivers have a CE provisional and with thecCorrect insurance required for a learner that might fit the EU regs multi-manning requirements
I doubt that the supervising driver would be able to record BREAK IF the learner was driving
Class C = any rigid without a trailer over 750kgs (the +E bit)

If they take some spanners they could remove the fifth wheel, I don’t know where they’d put thought!

Course she can, she has a licence for a rigid goods vehicle and a solo tractor unit is just that.
A question that has been asked many. many times on here. so many times that there is a sticky dealing with the subject.

I don’t know why they would need to. Would you take the towing hitch off a car if you did not have the B+E entitlement or from the prime mover of a drawbar outfit if you did not have a C+E?
