If a driver was having an in house assessment and the assessor didn’t insert his card because it reverts to poa and then they run out of time after 15 hrs and 10 hrs of driving could the assessor then put his card in and then carry on driving as he has been with the driver from the start ?
Yes, he would need to do manual entries for the shift though.
Thanks for that.
Sorry about the previous short reply I posted from my phone.
The regulations only say that there must be two or more drivers at all times except the first hour, they don’t have to intend to multi-man a vehicle from the start of the shift.
The only problem I can see would be the fact that the assessor would need to ensure his breaks were in order before driving, he couldn’t really say he was on break while in the passenger seat if he was assessing the other driver, so he could potentially fall foul of the 6 hour rule if he had to drive for any length of time.

I was thinking the same thing - if the assessment was constant then that’s all other work for the regs
So to be fully compliant the manual entries the assessor shows for his breaks would have to marry up with breaks the driver has shown ? by that I mean time wise.

I wouldn’t say that exactly, if the assessor was with the driver all day I can imagine a scenario where perhaps an assessor would wander off and have a smoke/coffee break while the driver was loading/unloading or seeing to paperwork or whatever.
To take advantage of the daily rest concession for multi-manning there has to be two or more drivers for each driving period during the shift, but that doesn’t mean they have to be joined at the hip for the entire day.
To be honest, in the real world I think the assessor could probably even book a break while in the passenger and there would most likely be no questions asked, technically it could be awkward if questions were asked but realistically who’s going to care

as Tach says BB could assess from your place to the M5 then 15 min then switch to passenger mode so break till they come off at say Exeter
