Doing it alone, or use a Canadian Attorney?

Hi All, Big turmoil going on here!

Have looked into the BIG move to Canada for many years now and have finally decided to take the leap! Done an on line assessment with immigration.ca, which is an Attorney called Colin R. Singer and had a 1-2-1 meeting with him in London last Monday, he seems v. good,. He helps to sort out your job by arranging interviews and eventual contracts. The companies he uses all seem to attempt to get you home most w/ends or at the most you’re away about 10 days.

Has anyone used his services or any other legal services? Can anyone recommend it as it costs alot of money, about £4000!!! :open_mouth: OR should we try the alternative option of doing it ourselves, with the risk of ending up working for a dodgy company?

On the doing it ourselves option, my wife has been in touch with Mrs R. who has been a mine of information and a great help (a reply to your email is coming ) I also understand the argument mentioned, “why pay when you can do it yourself?”. But I have to say, peace of mind goes a long way to! (If they’re any good of course!)

Anyone used an Attorney or have any thoughts or advice??

Thanks

Firstly, the majority of firms who hire expats are reliant on the expats being fairly happy as negative feedback to CIC could make lots of trouble for the firms.
I did the move for myself and the firm I am with are not dodgy as far as I can see. In fact they have asked the US DOT to come and do an audit on logs, etc, so that should say it all. The agencies do help to sort the PNP and PR easier, but you can do it easily enough with a lot of care in the paperchase.

A friend of mine used an agent. Cost heaps of money and he jacked after 3 months and went back. If he comes back then he says he will sort it for himself.

Hi bobthedog,

Thanks for the reply. I do appreciate your opinions and experiences, we were just thinking along the lines that if we employ an attorney, he will hopefully take the paperwork & interview side of things out of our hands and give us a smoother transition into Canadian life.

The guy we’ve been talking to is lining up interviews for me in the Maritimes & Alberta. It seems that we would have more negotiating ability to get a suitable job if we are properly represented legally, don’t know though?

I think it seems to me that if your job is ok then life is good out there, if the job is away from family too long at any one time, then the wife and kids find it harder to settle. I feel that we are only going to do this the once so ideally want the best chance to succeed. Just want to get it right I suppose!

Here’s hoping …

£4000 for peace of mind  :exclamation: :exclamation: :exclamation: :open_mouth:
I think I would rather DIY than hand over that amount for something that could be done easily myself with a little research trip and alot of planning.
I also don’t know what “negotiating” you will need to do as nearly all the Trucking companies that use PNP will offer you a job as long as your experience and paperwork are in order.

Hi austin powers
just putting my pennyworth in, as you know we did it ourselves, why pay someone 4000 to do what you can do yourself for less, and that money can go towards something when you get over here that’s $8000 :exclamation:
As for you being away a long time my hubby is away about 8-the most has been 16 days, and we manage fine, it helps when you find a good friend which i have, both husbands work for the same firm.
So think about it seriously,$8000 to some attorney or $8000 to put towards something when you get here.
Good luck hope everything works out

ps. my hubby was talking to someone in Alberta the other day and he said the house prices over there are atrocious, a trailer will cost about $150,000 and their building 1 bedroom apartments which will cost $120,000. Just thought i would pass on that bit of info to anyone who is thinking of going to alberta.

I am going on the 12th April. If you look in Truckstop News some firms are advertising in there. I rang about 10 firms to see if they were taking on Brits under the PNP scheme then asked about work, money, benefits, etc. Most of the firms are interviewing over here and the one Im going with pays for everything except Police Check (£10)/ Drugs Test (£100) over here. All the paperwork has been done and sent to me, I told them when I want to come and theyve sent me a return plane ticket (just in case you dont like it) this week. I will be put up in a hotel and fed 3 times a day for 3 weeks while I am training. I have heard a couple of horror stories off people who used these Immigration Firms and how do you know they wont put you with a ■■■■ firm. You are better off speaking to firms yourself and when you are happy with one, let them help you FREE. I dont know what it will be like when I get there but if everything goes ■■■■ up Ive not lost any money and I`ve got a plane ticket back. PM me if you want some more info.

good luck neilg with the move and all, i am sure you won’t want to go back to the uk.

the misses has relatives in Canada & they keep saying we should move on over, the kids have a couple of years left at school & we might look into doing it then.

Neil. I will be in the UK when you are flying out. Be good to maybe catch you before you leave so we can exchange details.

darren. If your sig line is right then you will find it great here. Enough said.
