Doing an odd night shift?

If I normally work days can I still work the odd night shift (pre 4am start) ?
If so, am I limited to the 10hr working limit or is that just for people who do night work all the time ?

It says ERF not RAF:

As long as you have the required daily/weekly rest periods yes you can do the odd night shift.

If you work at anytime between 00:00 to 04:00 (goods vehicle driver) and you don’t have an opt out agreement in place you are subject to the night workers working time limit of 10 hours working time in any 24 hour period.

Yeah, I understand the ‘opt out’ but can I do a longer shift the day after my pre 4am start ? e.g start my next days work at 6am, can I work 10+ hrs ?
Basically is it just the pre 4am start where I am limit to 10 hrs, even though my other 4 days work in the same week start after 4am and are classed as a day shift ? (was told ‘‘once a night shift was worked all other work in the same week had to fall in line with night hours’’ ?).

Sorry I misunderstood what you wanted to know

The night time working limit applies to the period of 24 hours from the start of the shift that will see you doing some work between 00:00 and 04:00 and only that 24 hour period.

I’ve heard this stuff about the working limit applying to the whole week before and it’s not correct.

No, you didn’t ‘not understand’. I just had a couple of different points I needed clarifying.
Thanks for your help.
One last thing, can my company make me start earlier than 4am without any sort of driver agreement, especially as we all normally start work after 4am ?

I would say that depends on what’s in your contract of employment, most contracts of employment I’ve seen allow some leeway by the employer to adjust hours to some extent, but you’d really need to read it to see what your particular contract says.

Theoretically they could could ask you to start ‘anytime’ can’t they
As long as you’ve had your legal break

Thanks guys.
