Diversion signs

why do they always disapear, you know you come off motorway following them ok then you come to a r/o or t-junction and there gone, its fine if you know the area but if you dont its,eny-miny.mo.
its never really bothered me until the other night when im directed off a1, luckily i knew road but truck in front obviously didnt, we came into town , signs were gone so he started to go straight ahead but then had 2 nd thoughts, on came the reversing lights, i couldnt go anywhere as cars right behind, so flashed him to come back[thought it would be nice and steady] but he came flying back, i hit the horn thinking zb hell here we go.
luckily he stopped a few inches off my bonnet
i then took the lead and got us back to the a1, but who puts these signs out , why do they disappear, then reappear 10 miles later.

They took lessons from the French

The best diversions are the ones that take you to a low bridge/weight restriction/housing estate  .

Why do they never bother removing the signs that they attach to lamposts when the reason for the diversion has gone ?

It all depends on whare the diversion starts.
If it’s due to a motorway closure, then it’s the HA Contractor that will put them out. Usually the “free standing” temp diversion signs are used when it’s a planned closure for roadworks (Have set signals for a couple of those tonight, and checked that they’d put them out) the problem then comes with 2 groups of people, A) The “Youths” or ■■■■ artists who think it’s a good idea to move, point them in another direction, or just thrown them over the nearest garden wall. and B) the ones who will collect them up and weigh them in at the scrapyard. (These people will also unscrew the direction signs etc from motorway junctions and weigh those in!!)
The roadworks gaffer is supposed to drive through the diversion prior to actually implimenting the motorway closure, to make sure the route is signed, and free from any obstructions. He will not usually go through again, until the next night, or when the signs need collecting, whichever is first.
For immediate motorway closures that are put on when someone spreads the component parts of their vehicle/ load/passengers or self, across the carriageway, we are starting to put the perminant diversion plans into action.
you will see at the closed junction, (when used) a sign to say “Diversion follow ##” this can be a square, circle, triangle, diamond, either blacked in or not, these are also stuck on the roadsigns at each and every turn along the Diversion route, and will bring you eventually back onto the motorway one or two junctions further down.
These diversion routes have been worked out in conjunction with the local councils, police and HA, and are the “best” route that will take the motorway traffic including HGV’s. Unfortunately, sometimes you just can’t get away from low bridges, where these are, with no available other route, then highsided HGV’s will need to be stacked up on the motorway until it reopens(similar to the stacking for Dover) or if it’s going to be a really long term job, a contraflow is sorted out.
All that’s for motorway diversions. for diversions on other roads, it’s down to the local Council Highways dept, we’re not involved with those.
