The TC used to be concerned about the distance between an external transport manager’s “office” and the operating centre. The travelling time must be counted as working time. But with the universal use of modern communications, email, Skype, phone-cameras, scanners etc, is the physical distance still relevant?
Last place I worked our external TM was in Norfolk the company was based in Tunbridge Wells. We wrote a letter to TM on how he would be able to do his job from Norfolk using email to send drivers hours and vehicle data, and then monthly site visits, but then our trucks weren’t doing high mileage.
I am based in Cambridge and have a licence in Tipton, West mids. A lad that works for the other company in the yard is based in Luton so he is around the 100 mile mark like myself.
