Digi tacho - Manual entries

Being just a part time casual HGV 1 driver, in a typical week i would perform manual entries on the digi tacho to show the non-driving hours i have worked.

A typical week currently is: -

Mon 0730hrs > 1730hrs (non-driving)
Tue 0730hrs > 1730hrs (non-driving)
Wed 0730hrs > 1730hrs (non-driving)
Thu 0730hrs > 1730hrs (non-driving)
Fri 0700hrs > 1900hrs DRIVING

So on a Friday morning i would enter (using the digi tacho fitted to a 62 plate Renault premium - not the type you can see your face on your digi card beaming down at you through the hole in the card drawer but the type pre this) the previous weeks non-driving shift info into. No problems before until last week.

Having entered mon, tue & wed start and finish times without problem, i entered thursdays start time of 0730hrs but it would not let me select the finish time of 1730hrs, only 0000hrs > 0500hrs approx.

I checked i had my dates correct and also that the digi tacho had the correct date set and that it wasnt ‘one day out’

In the end i just had to accept a time that it offered in order to save and continue with my shift. Now i don’t think i can amend anything that has been saved is that correct? What might have gone wrong with the entries?

Once a manual entry is completed and confirmed it cannot be changed, I don’t know what you did wrong but to be honest I wouldn’t do manual entries into a tachograph for none driving days anyway.

The regulations only require you to keep a record of none driving days in weeks that you drive in-scope of EU regulations, the records can be written on printouts or charts and only the date, your name and the start and finish times are required.

Putting that many manual entries into a digital tachograph must take ages and I would have thought the risk of making mistakes was high, so personally if I was going to do manual entries for none driving days I’d write them on charts or printouts.

edit: By the way, the records for none driving days are only so if you get stopped the authorities can check that you’ve complied with the daily rest requirement on days that you drive in-scope of EU regulations and the weekly rest period in the same week.
After 28 days you can file the records in the trash bin unless you want to keep them for your own records

Much appreciated, thanks.

Did you include breaks in your manual entries?

I recorded the rest periods between shifts but no breaks, did’nt even consider recording them tbh, now you mention it though…

Perhaps recording non-driving work is more of a headache than its worth.

I thought it would be a good idea as then i can demonstrate all work on my digi card, for employer and DVSA if required, rather than have to keep reams of paper for the last 28 days etc.

I would suggest follow tachographs advice and on the driving day write the previous day’s work on a print out. A single piece of digital paper can be used for all the days, just put date, start & finish times for each day on the one piece of paper - not loads to carry then.
