I’ve not used my card yet as all my driving in the past has been in military who are exempt so when I put my card in for the 1st time do need to do a manual entry if so what. TIA

It might chuck the card back out the first time - seems to be a random thing, but just reinsert and it should be happy.
Oh do remember it is your mugshot that should be the last thing you see going into the machine (ie: card upside down) else the tacho machine will throw a wobbly and chuck it back out again while muttering about how it’s got the brain the size of a small planet and it has to put up with these dumb humans. Not that experienced drivers ever do this, or put their debit card in…or err.
