Hi,
As a newly passed driver and currently working for an Agency, I was sent to a Building site (which is a vast area) where the work is almost all internal movements of waste skips but with very little on road work except for access to different gates. After reporting to the reception office around 07.00, and meeting the guy I would be covering for the next few days. I was advised to get in the passengers seat and drove me round all the various gates. It was approximately 1 hour later when I was requested to take over driving duties. I know I should have had my Tacho in Slot 2 but guy was driving etc.
I put in 10mins of “Other Work” for Checks but probably should have even waited at least a further 5 mins before driving of.
Anyway, the 1 hour that I was on site (probably Other Work??) is not recorded on the Tacho. Can I put this as a Manual Entry the following morning??
Although, I understand Drivers Hours and WTD, but when completing, CPC, there was no mention of how to do Manual Entry or Infringments, I am stressed with the Tacho entry etc, hopefully this will settle down when I have a much clearer understanding.
Also, at the end of my shift, I put the setting on Bed (rest?) and withdrew my Tacho as to me this seems the most logical thing? Is this the correct procedure?
Any advice regarding the above issue would be helpful.
Thanks
First off, don’t stress about it.
Ideally, you would have put your card in Slot 2 at the start of your shift, then swapped the cards over as and when you change seats.
There is no way you can “backtrack” before the point your card was last ejected using the manual entry keying procedure via the head unit. The correct way to correct an earlier entry is to do a handwritten entry on the back of a paper chart or printout. Make two such handwritten charts, sign and date them both. Hand one in to your employer and keep the other one with you for 28 days, then bin it (the Regs would have you making just one copy, keeping it for 28 days and then handing it in - the potential for it to go missing during the intervening month is a little too risky to my mind, hence the advice to make two and hand one in straight away).
As for your end-of-shift procedure - nothing at all wrong with doing that, although there is really no need (some will argue, quite logically, that in most driving jobs you don’t actually stop working the moment you eject your card, so setting it to Rest at that point is technically incorrect). As long as you are happy that your whole shift is being recorded correctly, then it’s fine.
Many thanks for your help, just being a newbie, it can be quite difficult when doing Agency work and no induction and having to revise Tacho, Manual Entries etc prior to going on your first few shifts.
Learning everyday, just dont want to learn from my mistakes when it comes to Tacho etc
i never put mine on ‘rest’,before ejecting my card,as i am still working…walking back to the office to hand in keys,de-brief etc.
Thanks for your procedure, I presume you just do a couple of manual entries the next time you return to work?
I bear this in mind should I have further “Other work” just prior to leaving for “Rest”.
