I don’t know if it’s really worth posting this, as I don’t suppose it makes much difference where one parks these days, but, just as a heads up- I had about 200 litres of diesel stolen at the services below Eindhoven a few days back. I got there very late at night and had to blindside into a bay a long way away from the actual fuel station.
When I woke up and did my walk-round checks I noticed a puddle of diesel under the truck, and then saw that the filler cap was off and dangling by its chain.
Was the cap locked ? Diesel theft is pretty common now. Usually by other drivers so your location makes no difference.
No, it wasn’t locked. The filler lock doesn’t work on this wagon. As the boss pointed out, at least they didn’t do any damage.
True but locks seem to put off casual driver style theft.
Yeah, that’s a good point. I did wonder if they wouldn’t have bothered if it was locked. I suppose it was casual theft, they didn’t empty the tank by any means, I still had enough to get back to Helsinki
Via lubeck , keele or other ■■
Finnlines route: Lübeck (Travemünde) to Helsinki. That’s the way I go 95% of the time. Heading back out to Germany and the UK next week…
Brings back memories. Used to ship to Finland a lot. Into kotka , haaminaa and Helsinki. I like Finland & the people. Oh and lapin kulta. Good days they were.

When I started driving again (three or four years ago now) I was taking paper reels and containers from the paper factory in Imatra to Kotka and Hamina docks. I don’t think there was any driver-accompanied traffic out of there by then, and it’s even quieter still now judging by the lack of heavy traffic on the roads around here these days. Which reminds me, it’s been a while since I’ve popped in for a chat with my old boss. Always good to keep in touch
From time to time there are other British drivers on the Trav/Hki ferry but it’s very rare. That’s good for me, up 'till now I’ve always had a cabin to myself even when it’s been really busy.
Can you not get Lapin Kulta in the UK now?
I’ve never seen lapin kulta over here no.
Sad to here of the demise of the transport scene up there. Do they still bomb around in sisu’s ■■
Did you ever frequent the seamens mission in hamina ? Scene of a few rowdy evenings it was. And the truckstop on the 7 with the sauna downstairs , can’t remember the name.
Shipped in to Turku once or twice too. Always transiting though , never delivered or collected anything in Finland itself.

I used to regularly get the Harwich-Turku ferry, three and a half days, was lovely in the Summer, barbecues on deck and plenty of sunbathing, never wanted to get off.
Plenty of Lapin Kulta, but another favourite of the crew was Salmiakki liquorice sweets dissolved in vodka to make a drink that as slightly reminiscent of road tar.

Harry your a saviour , I’ve been trying to remember the name of them sweets for about 15 years. That’s me on the net later to find some & make my own party juice.
We used to do harwich- Turku too & Felixstowe - Helsinki. I’m sure my liver has never forgiven me !
Personally I find an anti-syphon device with an unlocked fuel cap and handy idea, have previously found my cap on the floor but with no fuel missing and no damage!

Not been in the Seamen’s mission or the truckstop with the sauna
When I started driving here I was just doing locals, and now I’m just doing Euro work. I ship out for Germany and the UK on monday but the loading will have been done for me.
PM me your address and I’ll put some salmiakki in the post to you. I’d not heard of dissolving them in vodka, but the ready-mix version is available in the (State run!) off-licences here.

No probs, shop around like ours did to find better deals, we have 50+ vehicles on the road and all have one fitted and never had problem with theft since.

The Finnish crew had it all worked out as to exactly how many to dissolve in how much vodka, I think it was something like 62 sweets per half litre of vodka, I have made it at home subsequently and had a fairly agreeable result.

Salivating here.
Hopefully you won’t have long to wait - they are in the post. I put four or five different brands (including that one in the photo!) in a jiffy bag and posted it about 10 minutes ago.
I’ll let you know how I get on !
