My oldest friend worked as a scientist at “a government owned vehicle testing facility” for all of his working life and they made the government aware of the various pollution dangers from diesel engines many years ago. They were then told to keep quiet about it of course.
Pete.
Haulage and agriculture will continue to use diesel, aviation and domestic heating will continue to use kerosene (or similar fuel), cars will have whatever the fashion dictates, motor bikes will continue to use petrol and big boats will continue to use the sludge left over. The fuels used will be in the ratio of the fractions that come out of the refinery, regardless of health issues.
It`s just another tax where they keep moving the goalposts, plus the new tax system that was introduced last year adds another lump sum on top of the ved for new cars over a certain amount annually for 3 years , no doubt someone on here will know more detail
As a retiree my mileage is now very low, but I still enjoy driving. With the absurd amount motoring costs these days, if it isn’t fun it isn’t worth the carrot! I like a car that makes good progress but I also like the throb of a straight-six diesel and a 6-sp manual 'box . To that end I’ve equipped myself with a reliable second hand (slightly sporty) car with all that specification and very low mileage. It is sublime to drive. I fully expect it to see me through to the zero-diesel age by which time I should be in my late '80s. Robert

I think the whole thing is a con. We were encouraged to buy diesel and move away from petrol because diesel was much cleaner .
Leave it out.
Diesel buyers are all about the ( often just perceived ) cost savings at the pump. While everyone knows it’s a dirtier fuel than petrol.Especially when the tight fisted scrooges then try to save even more by not maintaining the things and removing DPF’s and/or running them on paraffin.
Never ever heard of anyone topping themselves with a pipe from a diesel motor.
I’m sticking with my old Berlingo diesel simply because of it’s reliability and longevity. There are more economical vehicles available, but not within the price range of a state pension!

I thought the Berlingo would be expensive to run , what with the rising price of good steam coal . anon

I’m seriously thinking of ditching the V12 Jag for one of these. If I can find one after the banger racers wiped out too many of them.
That’s what multiples of 6 cylinders should sound like and which only a petrol engine can provide but without the big speeds which are now a liability even on deserted French roads not an asset.
Buzzer:
This chap has my sense of humour trying to upgrade from this leg powered model, made me chuckle anyway. My Mrs has a diesel pugget 308 dangerous on a motorway as it gets to 90 to easy and you don’t know your doing it, the best diesel car I ever owned was a new Audi A6 as smooth as butter to drive and also my Mrs had a new A4 both brilliant cars and they did not depreciate like a lead balloon either. also had lots of discoveries but the last was a V8 and for its weight it went really well, cheers Buzzer.
Webuyanycar also tell lies! I tried for quote on my L reg Range Rover, just for curiosity, but they only go back to M reg!
Btw, the RR is run on LPG, and is the third LPG RR I’ve had over the last twenty years. Its the only way I can afford to run such superb cars.
I do it simply for economy, but for those who are concerned about “the environment” LPG is also very clean burning, much better than the two alternatives.
I’ve run both fuel types over the years, some company owned (although not for quite a few years), and others owned by me. Until my latest car, a 2013 Ford Mondeo 2.0 litre diesel automatic, I’ve tended to prefer petrol cars. I’ve never been too bothered about fuel consumption and mpg. I’ve been a Ford driver for most of my life, this is my 20th I think. So I don’t think that I’ll ever change from the Ford marque. Yesterday and today I’ve covered over 500 miles on company business, mainly Motorway running with the attendant delays, hold-ups and stop starts. I brimmed the tank before setting out and I’ve brimmed it again this evening. I hardly ever check my mpg, but on refill to refill I’ve got 56 mpg on this trip, quite a surprise. So I’ll happily stick with diesel fuel, besides the car has a poor second hand value now and it does everything I ask of a car.
I echo Emmerson’s comments regarding LPG - don’t want to say it too loud in case somebody in Whitehall hears and bangs the tax up! I’ve had big American motors for the past 43 years, never had a diesel car, but my current one is on LPG. 26 years old, 5.7 litre V-8, 270,000 miles on the clock and runs like a Swiss watch. Gas tank under the chassis, small reserve/starting petrol tank, 7 very spacious (and comfortable) seats, double bed, telly, room behind the back seat for my little Honda Dax, even with all the seats up. Twelve years ago when I first bought it, the MOT tester ran a diagnostic on his exhaust tester because it was running so clean, he thought his machine was faulty. I’m happy to carry on paying 49p a litre for my gas, you can keep your diesels, thank you very much.
I know my V6 diesel Jaguar is now worth about 2p. I bought it new in 2004 and it cost £33000+, It’s a good car so it’s staying and they can stuff the scrappage schemes up their jacksy. And nobody is mentioning pollution from petrol engined vehicles.
Electric cars?? well my car will do 500+ miles on a tankful of diesel, it takes about 5 minutes max. to refill it and it’s ready for another 500 miles, when electric cars can get near that…we’ll talk.

Diesel cars were, are and will stay Always the best solutions, IF THE LOW THEY DON’T OVERTAX IN FUTURE.
But worse for the law, cheaper fuel, less consumption, and don’t speak about of fueling even cheaper at the company depot.
Differences have been Always in favours of diesels, today my car weights about 1300kg with a 110hp (20 years old).
My women has a new car about 5 years old, only about 60hp and about 700kg weights it. But i do for the same price in consumption the dubble in kilometers.
And for the rest its al F…ck… ing, years ago here were diesel promoted because petrolcars were environemental wasters, now
it is the opposite.
With coming LEZ zones here, if you pay more you can drive into the city, so if you pay your old car in a clean car.
Business business no more no less, because car selling business goes already years bad here. Cars have become nearly indestructible today. Live becomes more costly and more, so people continue to drive there old cars, so the only way to get them of the road is to forbidden them everywhere, so they have to buy new. But with the last news for this year that 10.000’s jobs will disappear, don 't know.

I can get my hands on a few barrels of gun powder if anyone would like to join me in a little job in west London?
Aye ROF but to get to the place you are talking about you will have to conform to all the “balls aching” emission requirements plus you will have been “clocked” driving into the “Zone”. So how about attempting a water borne approach ? knowing your luck your box of matches would have got damp !
A Diesel engine that is properly serviced has cleaner emissions than a poorly serviced petrol engine, according to a report from the RAC organisation, food for thought??

Quite right David ! what a load of Bollox all this crap about diesel being worse than petrol ! Well you could stand a workshop full of diesel fumes but no way could you stand a Shop full of petrol exhaust, unless of course you was committing “Hari Kari”

I have plans to access the Westminster site in a DUKW, cunningly disguised as a tourist vehicle. All I need is about twenty Japanese chaps with cameras and we’re on our way!
P.S. I could do with a nice little NHK ■■■■■■■ for the vehicle if you know of any available?
