Once again it depended on where you lived what work you did and how you were paid, a good week for me circa 1991 would net me £300 with the odd night out Monday to Friday a bit of loading and shunting on a Sunday morning would bag another £40-50.
I was on a percentage of the load value as that was the best way to earn money back then.
The pay has certainly not kept pace with the cost of living in recent years, we should be on double that now and we are not.
I quit driving in 95’ to drive heavy plant the money was on an up after that, the late 90’s was good time to be a driver.

I remember being paid like £1.30ph apprentice wage at Widdowson Group unloading and loading lorries same wage as the full timers over the legal age for ■■■■ poor pay. I lasted 3 weeks before I walked.
I did not see how unloading and loading a lorry was a skill I’d need an apprenticeship for.
I was on the cars then, so approx £32/34k, two weeks worth of work every week mind.

My best paid job in real terms i suppose was my first lucky break, i’d left general haulage and gone van driving on nights, shortly after they expanded night trunking and needed a few bodies so right time right place right licence, on my final year there around1990, maybe 91 when it came to an end with redundancy i was on target for £30k, though that pales when compared to Tolemans transporters who brought out those Iveco/Lohr mk5 12 car carriers around 87, drivers on them were knocking up a grand a week.
It all went pear shaped after 97 when Blair and his nulab disciples opened the floodgates and destroyed the working class of this country by unmeasured immigration, which has never stopped and won’t because we, the electorate, can’t help voting like turkeys for our very own Christmas by electing traitors, ironic really that labour, once the party of the working class, just completed the treachery that heath and thatcher started, and those smoothie social democrats masquerading as tories since have just carried on their work, but have also bankrupted our nation into the bargain.
We, the working class, will never see the good days again, as we the working class are only really wanted when there’s a war (of their making) on and they need cannon fodder, some things never change.
Ironic how the only two unions to recommend brexit were the two rail unions, whos members still enjoy better deals than almost every other blue collar workers, worth thinking about.
Sorry to drag politics into this, but they really are all the same, and they are the ones who have done this to us, i just wish people would stop believing them and voting for more of the same and then acting surprised when more of the same arrives the day after election , there’ll be proof of more treachery to come over the next 5 years if you look for independent news and avoid the BBC/chanel no4 propaganda channels, mark my words.
I was working for an airline catering firm back in 97 as a fresh faced 18yr old, 4on/4off in the food stores, and I seem to remember pay was around £3.70 per hour.
Another local firm that packed cd’s and soon after dvd’s was looking for warehouse operative and pay was £4.50 per hour, I applied and got the job, and when I mentioned I had forklift tickets they gave me another £1 per hour extra!
Loading and unloading trucks 5 days a week got me wanting to be a driver, I lasted a year before I moved on, and got a job driving vans.
Fast forward 20 years and am now an owner of a bendy truck ticket and earn around £34k for a 50-55 hour week.
I’ve found a tax confirmation form for 98/99 that shows £17,900 for class 1 night trunking.Which by that point with limiters,or hub type operations,was usually around a 50 hour week and would have been a bit less money than that in '97.With the days of around £200 per week,which was probably more money in real terms,for at most 9 hour,or often even less,job and finish shifts,in the late 1980’s/early 90’s,a distant memory by then.
What’s all this '80’s and '90’s stuff. I was on 35 quid a week flat rate on artics in the late '60’s, lived in hole in’t ground and only got fed once a fortnight. What’s more, we had to stack 20 ton of razor blades and handball 'em off as well. You whipper snappers haven’t got a clue.

Found an old P60. In 1986 my top line was £10,300. Tax of £2,400. That would have been for a large private gen haulage company. Away Mon to Fri. Nights out were about £12.50 on top of the pay. So we`re looking at about 8,000/52 = £152.00 + £50 night out, per week.
Also dug out a copy of RHA / JIC (Joint Indusrial Council) agreement, for 1986.
32 tonnes (artic) £107.50 for 40hrs plus £1.50 a day for above 32tonnes, remember 38tonnes was new then. So, 115/40 = £2.88 per hour. Night Out at £12.20 plus £0.50 meal allowance.
