The drivers in Destination Doha were Frank Hook,John Williams,Dave Poulton and ■■■■ Rivers.I think in the documentary they came upon ■■■■ Snow stuck in the desert and pulled him out.

thanks for that info dave.

Hi, yes ■■■■ was genuinely stuck in the sand whereas the film crew had set up the actual dd trucks to ‘get’ stuck, ■■■■ apparently turned to the camera and said something along the lines of ‘why couldn’t this happen outside such and such a brewery!’ and it was cut from the final film which was a shame!

Good film though, i really liked dave poulton and john Williams in it, they knew the score.

GLEN IR:
Hi all just wondering if anybody knows what happened to ■■■■ snow and wether he is still kicking about thanks glen

To GLEN IR and everyone who doesn’t know:
■■■■ Snow passed away in the early 1990’s. He had the big ‘C’. Bob Paul (his old boss at Asian Transport/Astran) told me he was “a truly great ‘character’ but someone who needed an arm round his shoulder at times”.
■■■■ RIvers:- Roumour has it that he too has passed away some years ago.
While writing The Long Haul Pioneers book, I tried relentlessly to trace him for a period of 2 years but had no luck. There is no sign of any of his family either in the locations I was given so unfortunately, unless anyone knows different, we do not know if Rivers is still alive or dead.

The Long Haul Pioneers - A celebration of Astran gives a fascinating insight to the drivers who pioneered the overland routes to and from the Middle East in the early days. ■■■■ Snow is featured heavily.
Book available from oldpond.com, Amazon and through various book websites

Fantastic doc and like you say Dave Poulton and John Williams"knew the score"
But i am i the only one thinking that JW came across as a bit of an obnoxious git?
Seemed like Frank Hook breathed a sigh of relief when the convoy split up.
Tin hat ready.

Don’t know about that but it must have been hard for two men who were used to spending lots of time on there own to share a cab for weeks on end.
I know in the book it said they got very frustrated with having to do things to suit the filming and how it put a lot of time on the trip.

Yes…very sorry when i heard too…i had the pleisure of meeting both of them…and working with them on the same company…the pioneers of the middle east…at least where the uk is concerned…ASTRANS…OF COURSE…or ASIAN TRANSPORT the name when i started…not forgetting too JEFF RUGGINS…another great guy…now talking about the M/E in the sky.

HI all, after ■■■■ left Astrans He done quite a bit of agency work and freelance driving for a few east anglian companies. He told me that he once applied for a job with Fred Archer when he was trading as ACS in felixstowe. Fred asked him if he had any Continental Experience and when ■■■■ said yes he told him to come down and see him and to bring his Passport as proof . ■■■■ duly arrived at Freds office and emptied out a carrier bag of nineteen Passports on the office desk .Fred told him to start the following Day. ■■■■ arrived bright and early the next morning, Hung arround the yard for an hour and when no one turned up he went back home. Fred phoned Dicks house mid morning asking where he was and ■■■■ told him to shove it.
The last time I saw ■■■■ was at the Mobil Services on the A14 near newmarket . He was driving a Mercedes 7.5 ton box van with a sleeper cab, he even had his Ham Radio mounted between the seats.I think it was an Ipswich Co he was driving for and he was as happy as larry.
I think that was in the early nineties.
Regards Jamie.

What happened to ■■■■ Rivers who was in the Doha video and also in one of the films on the Southall Twilight video, driving a Marathon in a Leyland publicity film

By coincidence I was loading on Wrexham Ind Estate on Tuesday night and a subbie pulling an ASTRAN trailer stopped outside for directions. I cant remember last time I saw one up this end, or maybe I just dont get out enough.[/list]
