Devon Question

Help me out can you, South-Western lads or lasses? I’ve got deliveries tomorrow in Crediton and Hatherleigh and need to know - what’s the A3072 like between the two places? Artic, curtain, 13’ 9’', not a lot of weight on (the lorry, that is - I’m a different matter). Any bridges, weight/width limits, places you wouldn’t want to meet a similar-sized vehicle? Thanks.

It’s been about 4 years nearly but what I remember is that there’s no low bridges in fact can’t remember any bridges full stop, it’s not too bad actually but there’s a couple of times where you need to proceed with caution but it’s not too bad a run with a few lay-bys too if needed, enjoy the Devon countryside. Oh by the way it’s a slow road at times but I’m sure you’ve guessed that.

Theres a railway bridge in Coppestone (?) it’s OK though because the railway is underneath  I think it’s narrow with traffic lights ? As I remember plent of tractors to keep you going steady :unamused:

On the subject of Devon… what’s with the different coloured minor road signs? I was going down some “A” roads last week and the minor turns had standard white signs but instead of a black border some had red, some had green some had blue etc.

What gives? If it’s some code it would be handy to know

See that was my thought too but then I thought there can’t be THAT many MOD bases…

Edit: Google has the answer. They’re local classes if roads like the green for a national route but for Devon onky.

No probs mate,. I use it all the time,… sometimes nearly fully freighted and running at 14’ 9.
When you get to Jacobstowe on the A3072, don’t fork left on same road, take the right fork, B3216 to Hatherleigh joining the A386. (Torrington road.) you’l know you are on it left hand bend after fork with a church.

I think its something to do with the size/width of the roads, but no idea which is which.

I’ve done this Devon job for about 5 years or so now, using those roads every week…, and I’ve never even ■■■■ noticed what you’re on about…

Thanks all, that’ll save me some time! Could make all the difference.

There’s a whole website, fanbase and membership devoted to roads and road signs.

Who knew?

am based right near that route, we run 10 and 12ft stuff on it almost daily, no issue at all. Busy route for bulkers and other artics from mid to north Devon. No overhead bridges at all, only height restriction is under branches but they’re kept back by higher trailers

Ended up spending the night in Crediton. The forklift couldn’t lift some of the machinery off (Bristow’s of Devon was the drop) so after a long delay I tipped it at a nearby timber merchant at about 1800. Parked up in Bristow’s yard and set out at first light at about 0630, was in Hatherleigh by 0715. Hardly any traffic on that road, only a Gregory and an early double-decker bus larger than a car, and there weren’t many cars either. No drama which is what I like on a Friday…Thanks again for all the advice.
