Design and build regulations -Hgv mirrors

Didnt a truck manufacturer fit wipers to mirrors about 25 years ago?
Dont think they worked too well.
Anyone remember them?

This is what I was after. Thank you, I was right

Both of them are 62 plates. There are bolts above the passenger door as if the body builders or sign company haven’t fitted them back on

Now the only thing I can think of is this "no less than 2.00m rule +/- 10cm

Cause I can reach the roof of the truck. Maybe this is the reason

I shall carry a lengthometer with me next week and check

Actually, I believe you want a heightometer for that?

As said, car’s have the headlamp wash, some trucks do but wouldn’t it be nice if they started sticking heated washer bottles/pipes/jets on trucks, just like my car…would beat stopping every 10 minutes to throw snow up the windscreen!!

Don’t know mate but as an aside why can’t manufacturers build little motorised wiper blades on to truck mirrors, could be just vertical up and down attached to either side, fed up of cleaning mirrors then covered in cack a few hours later.

Oh dear life is such a ■■■■■!!

A bit of rag tied onto the mirror arm, about an inch wide and six inches long used to do the trick.

Yep, that’s what I’ve just done, cut up an old T-shirt into lengths and tied them to the mirror arms. Not seen it done for 20 years but as you say it used to do the trick. I’ll report back tomorrow.

i seen a foriegn truck going up a74(m) yesterday with that ,and it brought back memories of the 80,s .did they work ? if they did why did people stop doing it ?

The Iveco Turbostar with the Fiat V8 use to have them.

But the electrics where a little brittle that time as where thr plastics, so when mine was 7 month old it stopped working.

Don’t know if anybody remember the headlight wipers on the F10, the one with the double round headlights?

I remember using the rag trick and it had been going on for donkey’s years before I started driving artics, and yes the rags did work, and this time I don’t think H&S can be blamed for their demise; more likely the image conscious boss who didn’t like the thought of a bit of (often filthy) rag fluttering around one of his beloved trucks!

Ha, where do I get one driveroneuk? Looks like it works pretty well, it would effect aerodynamics though.

You can spec heated washer bottles and jets in volvo’s & scania’s actrosman.

Ahh, ha, ha, ha, I see what you did there Bking, you used Sarcasm. Well done sir. You should tour, you card!

Hi.
7.5 ton NQRs do not need any other mirrors apart from the standard ones fitted. This is to do with the hight of the cab and windows.

We run around 25 of them without any problems at the mot.

One of our customers bought a new Hino 7.5t, I asked why it was at the auto electrician next to our yard. No fog light :unamused:

Must have been am import then.

Unless there’s a factory in the UK building them, it’s gonna be an import anyway.

Had a go in the new shape Volvo last week, and the mirrors are just over half the width of the old style mirrors, plus combined with the much further forward corner pillar, the visibility is a lot better.

So they have listened to the drivers complaint of the bad blind spot on the previous model, they caught many a driver out approaching roundabouts !

Yes definitely.

Can be seen here pic 6 with the flat on (might be an F12?) lots of lovely old Volvo pics.
Can also be seen on the later F16’s with the rectangular headlights.

Thanks, nice pictures of real trucks, not the ones made out of recycled tupeware.

Just as a little aside if a vehicle has xenon headlights then it is a legal requirement to have headlight washers.

Right, we have received two Isuzu forward 7.5t trucks in the last month.

I need to clear up the rules on mirrors, I’m sure they are meant to have wide angle mirrors since 2009? But my last FTA book was printed in 2008… So it useless now.

I have looked on transports friend etc and it looks as though I’m right. But I want to confirm it and have a link to the rules so I can print them and show the TM

Any help you guys can offer would be great.

Forgot to mention, the trucks only have 2 mirrors. No fish eye, no kerb side and no wide angle etc. just rear viewing wing mirrors.

Cheers

Also, the headlights must have an auto levelling mechanism fitted

Indeed so. The aftermarket HID headlight kits are illegal in the UK mostly because they aren’t linked to the suspension
