Derv

Is the term “derv” dying out? I have asked a few drivers on various yards the best place to derv up over the last few years and been met with a glazed expression. Mention the word in the office and get looked at like I was speaking swahili. Is it time I retired?

You are making the mistake of thinking that these drivers are in fact British. You need to brush up on the Polish/Lithuanian/Hungarian/Romanian for derv to get your answer.

I remember there used to be a company near where i grew up had a great big tank in their yard with ‘gas oil’ written on it.

Until recently I worked in a fuel yard, and the tank labelled gas oil was heating oil/kerosene. The diesel tank was labelled derv. If someone asked me to fill a drum with gas oil, they’d get kerosene, not diesel.

Never heard of diesel being called gas oil.

Diesel Engine Road Vehicle…Derv.

I was under the impression Gas Oil was Red Diesel, But am probably wrong.

Yep I’ve always known Gas Oil as Heating oil too, I think m1cks memory might be affected by too much kerosene fumes

`Gas oil is what its normally called in France.

It might well have been a tank for red as they ran plant equipment

Gas oil is usually a term for red round here.

As for diesel, I quite like the term “Motion Lotion”, just that usually gets a response (and I suppose could sound kind of rude  )

I’ve been a HGV/PSV driver for 25 yrs & I’ve always known it as “fuel” fueling, fueled up etc

Motion lotion - quality

I may have to invoice users of Motion Lotion. I have been using that for years so its MINE!

Mwahahahaha

Have it on me lads, I’m starting a campaign to make it a recognised term

We used Motion Lotion when we were using CB. That was 25+ years ago

I bet you used to keep the mic` keyed in while you fueled up too    10:04 10:10 , guessing you need a 10 : 100 now ?

I use it all the time.

I thought it was Gazole

35 second Redwood viscosity index fuel oil, your central heating, your combine, the big John Deere & your hdi Peugeot OR tdci Ford run just nice on this but don’t tell anyone I said so!  (btw Known as gas oil in Spain also)

We used to have our pumps labeled as derv but they’re diesel now. And red is ‘gas oil’ around our northern parts

It was that logical old fashioned description which was how the older generations here decided to differentiate the untaxed/rebated ‘red’ from that used in ‘road vehicles’ and therefore tax paid.IE Derv or not Derv.Which saved all the aggro of labelling pumps as gas oil/red diesel/rebated/untaxed.

As for the continent Gas Oil in various translations was the usual term used in France,Spain or Italy while letting the taxed v untaxed issue sort itself out.Probably because the fuel tax issue wasn’t historically such an issue there as it it was here.
