Derailed Castle cement train at Carlisle

Nasty accident caused by a seized wheel apparently but thankfully no one was hurt ! If it had happened years ago on the mainline at Milnthorpe it could have ended up in the BTS depot  I recall that the forerunner of this train was Ribble Cement ( same firm I guess) and it used to roll past the depot going north every weekday at usually around 5:30 late afternoon and even sat in my office 200 yds from the line you could feel a low vibe as this was the heaviest train running on the main line at that time and was made up of 30 hopper tanks with 50 ton in each double headed by two Type 37 “Syphons” . A BR engineering work train driver once told me that after this double header got past Lancaster the throttles were opened up fully as it needed a clear run up past Oxenholme and Grayrigg and then full bore up Shap fell . It was doing about 50 mph past our depot full out ! It used to return South empty mid morning the following day with empty tanks from two days previous just “free wheeling” ! Cheers Bewick.

Dennis. Google “Thirsk railway accident 1967” for details of a serious accident between a cement train and a passenger train.

Now that was a very nasty accident Chris when a passenger train is involved there are bound to be fatalities unfortunately ! This is a shot I took off the bridge over the mainline towards the depot and it just so happened that the empty Ribble cement train was running south at the time !
Cheers Dennis.

It wasn’t that long ago when a cement train out of Hope Works in Derbyshire derailed in Sheffield station, was only running slowly and I think the tank wagons were just two axled.Apparantly bogie type wagons-4 axled- are less likely to derail.

Is that your yard west of the line, Dennis?

Short video of it. Several others out there too.

Hiya SDU ! yes that was the BTS depot ! The shot is looking south which put the yard on the Eastern side of the line and 2 acres of our yard had originally been the station goods yard with a line into the Libby factory which is out of shot. The expanse of tarmac in the foreground was the MOT Station which opened in 1968 but was closed in recent years. It was dead handy having the MOT on our doorstep for 25 years ! Regards Dennis.

Looks like the embankment gave way.
