Hi Folks, Yes it was harder work back in the 70s and 80s, but it left us with a lot of happy memories.
We got a lot of laughs from some of the characters who worked there.
I remember unloading asbestos sheets at a factory somewhere, and we went into the canteen for lunch.
It was a red hot day and Tony Claughan had a boiler suit on, as we stood in the queue, the canteen manageress said to Tony,‘‘You must remove your overalls in the canteen’’.Tony just turned his back on her and started to take off his boiler suit. When she saw his bare arse, she started to scream ‘‘Leave them on, Leave them on’’. Apart from his boots, it was the only piece of clothing he had on.We had many a laugh over that.
Great times! Alan and I have loads of stories to tell about our time there.

hi all,

just been reading on another thread about the death of kenny dagga, i had,nt heard but it was

about two years ago, died in his cab while over nighting in the doncaster area on his way to the south coast,
does anyone know any more, who he was working for, and what was the problem, i quite liked kenny

alan

Lenny Guy was at Abrahams when I was there on my YTS, Steven Oliver lived in the same street as My Mam & Dad and became an owner driver when Dents finished. He had an ex Frank Hudson Merc 4 wheeler working out of Cape. I worked with Kenny Dagga at John Dee’s, I’m sure He left there to work for Reeves, was about 20 years ago…

bill,
do you remember the driver who refused to swear, it was always flipping this and blinking that and
when something went really wrong it was oh dam!! captain alan kirk ha ha,

or the bloke from cockfield who walked up the driver with kettle and pots hanging from the bag slung
over his shoulder, all he needed was corks on his hat, jimmy something or other lol

alan

Hi Alan, Jimmy Crow perhaps?
Bill

hi andrewv8

we all knew steve oliver well enough, quite a lad, he ran his motor out of C AND A ROOFING at
evenwood .
in the seventies kenny dagga had a problem getting his class 1 licence, tried three times at dents then went to harry williams, i was talking to him in the late seventies approx 7 years after he left
dents and he was still a class 3 driver, but it seems he eventually passed his test as i can only remember garry reeve having artics.

Aye it was C&A Roofing, it was Frank Hudson that ran out of Cape. I’m sure I saw Kenny in an artic when he went to garry reeves. He was on the 4 wheelers at Dee’s though.

Hi Alan, the bloke who never swore was Harry Bowman, not to be confused with Bobby Bowman. Harry was small with gingerish hair, I think he came from Brandon or somewhere thereabouts.

Hi Ronnie, photo of Harry Bowman ( flipping heck) taken in Sept.2006 at a reunion He used to drive DGR 964 and then UUP 762. He had terminal cancer at the time. He lived at Browney. Regards Ken.

kennyjohnson
have you seen the photo of a line of dents motors in the early days on
page 147 of the “” old north-east haulage companies" thread, i bet you will recognise some if not all

alan

Alan & Kenny, You are both right in your own way. Harry Bowman was known as ‘‘Flipper’’ but he had left Dents when I started in 69.
Alan you were right in thinking about Alan Kirk, Known as ‘‘Captain Kirk’’
Bill

Hi Folks, Here is another name for the list. Jimmy Sherrington, Who was Yans brother in law. Here’s a photo of his 86 after an accident up Durham way. It was a head on collision and Jimmy suffered a broken leg.
Kenny, What engine would be in the 1946 Atkinson that Roger rebuilt, a 4 cylinder or a 6 cylinder?
