Thanks for the info on Robbie, Alan just rememberd I think he also did a bit for GE.Armstrong when I was there, prob just after Dents finished ( when did Dents finish?).
kenny you not thinking of restoring the AEC might be able to get you a discount I know one of the monty`s
Hello All,
Talking of restoration projects…here are some pictures of CVA197, the sister to CVA198 shown on previous pages. The photos were taken in either 1986 or 1987 on the day that these arrived in Tudhoe after Dents bought them from the showmen up in Scotland who had owned them from new (can anyone remember who brought them down??). This one was cannibalized to rebuild CVA198. The first photo was taken on the wash (Roger and Kenny Titshall are in photo). If you look to the right you can see the daycab 400 (VDC). The second photo shows 197 driving across the yard just outside of the garage with Kenny looking out of the quarterlight. Both were in a right old state and it is a credit to Roger for making such a good job of saving one of them.
Darren.
nice shots darren,
that day cab 400 series gave me nightmares and big muscles in my right leg, i eventually
cut a piece of wood so i could jam the throttle down and ease my leg
and that muddy old yard, happy days
alan
Cheers Alan.
I can remember a tale of one unit that sank down to its axle hubs in the large “puddle” that was outside of the warehouse and had to be pulled out. Apparently no matter how much dolomite was thrown in, the ground always sank probably due to the old mine workings.
I was showing the photo to someone who knows Kenny last night and he couldn’t believe how young he looks!!!
Some more pics to scan and post up shortly.
Darren.

Hi Alan all that weight on the back end would make it light on the handelbars (no power steering). I hope it was not a handball load. I dont seem to get many comments on the old photos, so here’s another one. Roger with his ERF, not a very good ropeing and sheeting job Roger.
Regards Ken
Seem to remember those twin-steers being called a “Chinese-six” am I right or wrong Ken.
Do you remember when John Henry paid travellers in advance to tarmac part of the yard in front of the office, they did part of it and left an old roller (which was scrap) to make it look as though they had to come back, they never did. Must have been the first time someone got one over on JH.

Ken,
Keep the photos coming, they are excellent!!
Darren.
Kenny, I think that your photos are great. How did you ever find the time to mend wagons. Keep them coming.
Bill
cracking photo of roger and his erf, i would never have recognised him.
if it had been me that had sheeted that load he would have called me a " BULLS KN**KER"

Geordie Edwards on the left,he became the first Liverpool manager,Roger and Des. The 4 wheeler had 4lw Gardner the 2 Chinese six’es had 5lw gardner in, all of 96 bhp. Good job they had very low crawler gears because they were often overloaded, you got a hole in the middle of your left hand with changing gear.
Ken
When i started at Dents Anti Claughan had been off work a long time after a accident. He stopped one night in Wetherby and went to the fish shop, getting back into his cab, one foot on the step, hand on the grab handle a motor past too close and wiped him off. He was in Harowgate hospital a long time, plates and screws in his leg.

Mac,
You are correct! I once read somewhere in a vintage lorry book that “chinese” was a term used to represent something that was back to front, in the case of a six wheeler with the double axle on the front of the chassis and not the back as was (and is) more common.
Darren.
I got wrong info on the ex BRS motors, they wer’nt the ERF’s they were the other motors in this photo. The one next to the bedford van looks like a Albion, i don’t know about the others.
Ken
