are you a long distance truck driver
even though some days i can get in 650 clicks and guys running on the continent may only do the same, i still call the continental boys the long distance truck drivers.
what about you
I have done 600 today just running from Calais to Coleshill and down to home via Hams Hall. But when I am over the water on a long run, tis nothing to clock up 750-820 depending on the terrain.
Personally, I would say that long distance is a driver who cannot get back to base in a day due to the time or distance travelled. Medium would be a long day run and local being in the same or surrounding counties.
I imagine opinions will vary a lot on this one
I do a Brighton trunk every Saturday, and that is 740 klicks round trip.It does help leaving the yard at 02.00.I can get there in 4 hours 25,which gives me five and a half hours to get back if I need it.
When I was doing Middle East,I thought on one trip home I’d do the whole Saudi crossing,1000 miles in one hit.Straight road,70 mph,why not?
After 1,000 klicks,620 miles,I was bushed.there is a limit to what you can do.
totally cream crackered but i luv the job so it was worth it and a ■■■■ sight harder than euro work without the perks but didnt even use the woolich ferry so it cant be distance by youre calcuator we ll settle on medium distance for last week as i wasnt really trying
as above
long distance is a run where you cant get there in a 9 shift
as i live in the Midlands i cant do long distance as i am unlikley to be sent north of Inverness
and ZeeeeeeeeeeB aint that far from Calais
Having said that sometimes when i was at PMT we used to do double Basildon from Cov 20 mins to tip
thats 820 and a ten got you back to Watford Gap
the whole job was about 12 hours
I did change-overs on nights in the UK for a little while & the monotony of running the same route all the time nearly killed me after international long distance work.I was totally exhausted after every shift. To me UK work is much harder than EU. So in my opinion there is nothing special about long distance work. The true heroes are the ones that get up every day ,leave their homes ,do boring jobs to support their families, come home every night & do it all again for years. The M/E & EU is for escape artists ( Like me ) that go where the grass is greener & move on when the going gets tough;Money-wise ,that is.
Long distance lads were often labelled ‘cowboys.’ This had nothing to do with way they drove the trucks,it was because of their attitude to the job. No loyalty to anyone or anything but themselves & went where the money was best. This is not a bad thing so don’t get me wrong. The West was won by down to earth farmers not by cowboys who drifted from ranch to ranch where ever the work took them. When a farmer had cash flow probs. the cowboys just saddled up went to the next job.It was the farmers that stuck to the job come hell or high water & made the West what it is today.
So hats off to the day workers! ( Of which I could never join )
Long distance these days is anything over 7 hours driving time per shift. That leaves a maximum of 3 hours as emergency ration to deal with traffic delays, diversions etc. Anything less that 3 hours emergency ration ain’t worth the risk, so I don’t do it.
Nowadays, as there is no more M/E, I would consider Italy, Spain, Portugal etc long distance. All I seem to do now is bloody Belgium and Holland and to me, thats just channel hopping which drives me potty.

Thats what a lot of mine is now. If I get a drop round Marseille or Perpignan I am made up. Sad innit

London-Bruxeles isn’t really Long Distance as a Scotland run would be longer. It’s just International Work.
Nja,if you go Milano could You start thinking on going one a Long Distance tripp to Greec,Porto,Wladiwostok or Kuwait
I agree with you Harry. Those who manage to hold down the same thing, day in and day out, deserve more recognition than those of us who scarper for pastures greener. I enjoyed the night trunk work because it suited my state of mind and circumstances at the time but when the circumstances changed and I got shot of the old cow, the long distances beckoned again.
Even Europe got boring though. Learning to abuse people in 7 or 8 languages got to be more than I needed so I came here.
Now, long distance has taken on a new meaning again. The most I have done was 2500 miles, not kms, in 3 1/2 days. I got 4800 miles in that week and that really did take it out of me. Had to have a day off to sleep then got another 3500 in the following week.
We have some trips which are 3000 miles or more in one direction. That’s without even leaving the country. This week I have only crossed 3 provinces to get into the Northwest Territories, 1550 miles one way, then done an about face and headed back out to Alberta. Total miles so far, since July 2nd, is 5100 miles but I still have another 200 or so to do today.

I’ll second that. I used to do three Rotterdams a week from Milton Keynes. The first I’d take myself, No2 and No3 were turnarounds in Dover. Didn’t seem like you were driving for more than 5 mins at a time. Spent loads of time looking over the ship’s rail though, and then there were all the duty-frees so it wasn’t all bad.
