So this morning the quarry has banned me from all it’s sites as my reversing camera isn’t working and it’s in their policy that it must be working to be on site. The camera has never worked and I defected it daily for the first 2 months that I worked here and made the boss aware on multiple occasions that it still wasn’t working. The quarry says that it is a legal issue and tippers must have a working reversing camera, I’ve let my boss know and he is not happy and saying that I shouldn’t have let them find out that it’s not working and I need to be careful what I say to people so that this doesn’t happen, he wants to have a meeting later today to talk about this.
Now I might not be every drivers cup of tea as I like to keep everything I do legal, but was I right not to lie to them, is it actually a legal issue and can I turn around to him later and confidently say that it’s his responsibility to make it legal as I’ve defected it?
I don’t know if I’m in the wrong or if he is just a dodgy operator.
Put it this way there is a written record (defect note) that it’s faulty . Who gets their arris shafted if there is a accident and God forbid someone gets hurt ■■
Well I used to defect it daily and then stopped as nothing was getting done so I believed it wasn’t a legal issue so wasn’t going to waste my time time, the boss collects all the defect sheets daily so I assume he still has them
And the quarry has someone killed by a reversing vehicle a few years back so they are pretty stringent now.
But if I thinks about it a few months ago he had me running around with a red stop light on the dash as the power steering was faulty and said that if VOSA stop me just to say that it had just come on and not to defect it incase I did get stopped, that was for 4 days, one of the artics is currently running without a dog clip too

red light could if involved in an accident be picked p on the on-board truck diagnostics so that would shaft you .
Dog clip , now if the 5th wheel has one of them spring loaded lock bars that comes down {the sort where you have to pull a wire etc to lift it to pull the handle ] there is no legal requirement to have a dog clip . the dog clip in that case would just be an additional feature ,
my saying for dash warning lights “If its red its dead . If this yellow just mellow”
if its green use a hanky and stop sneezing snot all over the place
While I’m aware of no legal requirement for reversing cameras to be fitted or working outside your boss’ customer’s site…
Their quarries are their private land, they can make any requirement they like about what vehicles they allow or not, if they want to replace the security gatehouse with a full MOT testing bay, and only allow girlie pink Fodens with orange tyres retrofitted with all round night vision cameras that pass a full test onto their site… they’ll struggle to find hauliers, but it’s their prerogative.
