Daysons of Carlisle Harry uffingham

In the eighties I used to do a regular run which involved taking a groupage filled tilt from Manchester down to Reggio de calibra in the toe of Italy, or if you were lucky a local run to Marseille for unaccomponied travel onto Malta. I would the pickup the empty trailer which had been tipped in Malta the week before and returned on the incoming boat then reloading somewhere in France or Italy to return to England. anyway I met this guy called Harry Uffingham and we spent 3 days together in Marseille waiting for the Malta boat which had been held up due to bad weather. Being an impresionable 23 year old at the time he told me endless stories about his middle east days driving a 111 Scania for Daysons of Carlisle he was a smashing fella and excellent company , the one thing that stood out was his badly scared face and upper body he told me this happened when his gas bottle for his cooker exploded in his cab causing severe burns. does anyone know him ,this was in the summer of 1986 or 1987 and he was early to mid fifties then so would be about 70 now. I used to work for R [reggie] Spearing of Heathrow in those days

I worked with Harry woofy (Harry wolfenden) at daysons carlisle in 1984/85 i could write abook if i could remember all them storys he used to tell what a man .He was from Rotherham and your right he must be nearly 70 now , also on dayson at that time Chris Stevenson now i think with Noel Swecker,Errol Flynn from Ayr he passed away a few years ago (always wore coller tie and suit),Billy Holland(bagdhad billy) from Berwick hes still driving, Black bill from Aspatria with his curry pan he never washed said it helped the flavour And me Keith(Klunk) ill go in the loft and dig out some old photos and see if we can get some names to the faces

Hey Klunk, I had forgot about this post as it was over a year ago.As I remember at the time Harry was driving an F89 for some crowd out of Bradford doing the Malta run as well. Most of his storys have faded with time although one that sticks in my mind was when he towed one of Astrans which had broken down all the way across the Saudi desert so it could be repaired, said it was his crowning glory to have one of the Hollywood boys on the end of a bar . These old middle east hands have always had my utmost respect they were proper drivers who helped each other out and had to be resourcful when things got tough, no ringing the TM to say you’ve broken down or got a puncture just get the toolkit or spare tube out and get on with it and hope a fellow sufferer passed by and lent a hand.

You could be right jj, were their trailers dark blue. Harry was working for a guy who subbed for them I think but I knew Keith who drove for Sinitas similar age to Harry and he came from Barnsley.

i am on with scanning them to my computer now any one know the best way to show them (i have used photobucket before)but it seems abit limited as there about two hundred pictures;;; here does any one fancy driving these buses overland to Nepal ask any mid east man about them they were usually new zealand or aussie drivers and carried up to about15 passengers always good crack when they stoped at the truck stops on route alway a few aussie sheilas on them and they could handle the drink and us lot

Ive only ever used photobucket klunk but with 200 pics itll be a full time job in its self :unamused:
i am sure someone on here must know of a quicker way

I have an interesting tale that concerned Alan Dayson in about 1975.I was at Geoff Bell’s on Denton Holme in Carlisle one day having a “crack” and acroos the road from Geoffs was the Dodge dealers McKenzie Motors who belonged to Cavray, and Alan was running them awful Barrios Spanish motors and would have been a good customer of this dealer!Anyhow, over the fence in the dealers yard were two new York 40 footers and I was desperate for trailers at that time as you had to wait months for them.So I says to Geoff,do you think they’ll be for sale? go and ask for such a bloke and he’ll know,so I goes over and looked through the fence at them ,and straight away see’s one is on Michelin and the other on AVON(spew up!!).Anyway I’m of into their sales office to ask and sure enough Chummy says yes one is still for sale £2grand,Alan Dayson has bought the other,so I say which one has Alan got?Why says Chummy? Well I tell him I’ll give you £2 grand for the one on Mich’s but £1800 for the Avon shod one! Oh! says Chummy let me ring Daysons and picks the phone up! He asks Alan"which trailer did you buy Alan" THE ONE NEAREST THE GARAGE OR THE ONE FURTHEST AWAY?(no mention whatsoever of tyres!) Alan must have said he didn’t know,Chummy puts the phone down and says to me £2 grand for the Mich one then and can you move it now?I’m on the blower to Milnthorpe and had a tractor unit and my cheque book on its way immediatley!!! Bloody salesmen, after I’d payed and the trailer left I told the “slimey toad” what I thought of him as Daysons were good customers and I was only a chancer so to speak! he never asked Alan if it was the one on Mich or Avon tyres!! But I shouldn’t complain as I got the one I wanted so I was delerious!!!Bewick.

Not arguing with you Klunk, but the driver looks like a guy who lived at Silloth known as Smudger, who later worked for Robsons and later Harry Vos.

Ron , i did think it might have been Black Bill from Silloth but looking at the pic again i,m not sure, bill had a rounder face than Harry and similer beards.
Must have been women about for Harry to have a shave on the Londra picture
